Guys leave after a coaching change. Had Cronin stayed, I would not have expected Johnson or Brooks to transfer. I don't see what's so objectionable about that.

They participated in Brannen's workouts and then decided to bail. That's the scary part.

And he is having trouble hiring anyone of note for assistant positions. And he has signed a tweener from Moeller. Oh Boy - excuse me for looking at the facts instead of the Cronin hate.

I was down on Bohn as an ad hire as well especially because of his involvement in the Colorado debacle with butchy. I do have to give the guy credit that he has hired what seem to be some great coaches so far, not including Brannen yet.

Rag why so negative now? I used to look forward to reading your post and insight but man the negativity is overwhelming.

To be fair, compared to last years off-season that's not a particularly negative take. You want to see real negativity there are some threads from last year I could recommend you.

To be fair I can recommend some other boards you should go and post on instead of here.

I don't recall anyone telling you the same when you were doing your black-cloud routine during Cronin's last few years.

I’d expect nothing less from a Cronin fanatic. I support the university not coaches that peaked.

It might be a good time to pause and share a bottle of 14 year aged Kentucky bourbon. For good or bad, we have change on the way. I never posted against Cronin but I am now looking forward to a new coach and a new offense. 😎

Guys leave after coaching changes. I am not as concerned as you that they participated in basic workouts and decided to go. Brooks' "guardian" seemed dead set Brooks was gone whether or not he participated in workouts. Some former players observed the workouts and raved about them.

Who knows why its taking time to hire assistants. The "tweener" from Moeller seems to be a good get. No he isn't a 5 star but a good get.

RE: LoJo in the transfer portal
I'll never understand why some people have such unabashed loyalty for people that had little to them.

I think it's ok to be annoyed at people who didn't appreciate what Cronin did for this program. I think it's weird for anyone to be so fiercely defending a guy that they go after our current AD who's seemingly only crime was not stroking Cronin's absolutely massive ego after one of the worst NCAA tournament losses in history. Because that's what happened.

Everyone seems to have 'sources' and are beating around it. I'm just going to put it out there. Cronin wanted a solid raise and extension on his deal after the Nevada loss. Bohn offered one that had significant performance based incentives (most of Cronin's raise would have come by advancing in March). Cronin was extremely surprised and insulted by that offer. He was done with UC and gone from that moment, especially since Bohn and him already had a history. If it wasn't UCLA, it would have been Arkansas, Virginia Tech, (etc) heck now even Michigan. Cronin was not going to be the coach of the UC program in 2019-2020. He put almost zero effort into scouting the 2020 class and it showed in our target list.

I personally don't see what Bohn did wrong. If Cronin had made a run in that tourney with that team, Bohn, with the support of the major donors, would have given Mick the massive contract (by UC standards) that he wanted. To ask for it after the disaster in Nashville was so tone deaf, I can't believe Cronin actually did it.

So I ask again, why in the world do we have some people in our fanbase who are so loyal to a guy that didn't have much for them in the end? Unless you are getting your facts from Dan Cronin, I just don't see it.

Bingo. I would have been fine with treading water with him (it wasn't really a fire-able offense in the context of his overall record), but to expect a raise + extension really took brass balls.

Based on what sources? Everything I've seen is the length of the extension and not the raise was the sticking point.

Also, the bolded is complete B.S. We had two scholarships and coaches generally save one for spring transfers. With the other we got a local top 150 recruit, I'm sure he as at or near the top of the targets list and most on here were very happy to have him (until he asked out of his LOI and they decided he sucks). How big of a target list do you expect when you get a top target and are saving the other scholarship?

#BohnDidNothingWrong

I mostly agree. I do think the primary reason Mick left could be summed up as a lack of appreciation - both in terms of his contract relative to the market and in the eyes and words of some number of particularly vocal UC fans and perhaps his AD. And obviously those are ego-driven motivations, but that doesn't mean they aren't also valid.

I do believe there had to be some sort of middle ground that would have made everybody (aside from the Cronin haters or whatever they like to be called) reasonably happy and also provided the most likely path to continued and even enhanced success for the UC basketball program. I think that's more on Bohn (who I also support) for not trying better to get there but I also acknowledge the fact that in the end, it was much more Mick who chose to jump than Bohn/UC pushing him out. PERHAPS there was a very slight nudge, but it wasn't a push. In the end, Mick CHOSE to leave UC and by extension, us.

As far as those UC fans hypercritical of Mick, of course, we all want to UC do better at everything from recruiting to long tourney runs. But I think we supporters were also more acutely aware that the grass very often isn't greener. And changing from Mick makes both the current and desired level of success less likely without Mick than it would have been with him, generically speaking. Of course, there were hypothetical if perhaps unrealistic, exceptions (e.g. going out of the box with a guy like Pitino who would have made that desired success more likely). But I do think we got the best conventional candidate out there for the UC job in Brannen. My take is that he's more likely than not to bring us at least slightly worse results than Mick did, but he's also got a real chance (albeit slightly on the unlikely side imo) to do as well or better than Mick did. In any case, he deserves our support (and he has mine) to show what he can do for at least a year or two if not longer before passing judgment. But it's also fair to note that the grass is clearly browner than it was a few months ago and that it didn't necessarily have to be that way so it's hard not to have some "I told you so" feelings as well. I think we all hope it's a case of taking at least one step back before taking several forward.

So even though I was a Mick supporter, I can still see both sides and hopefully retain some level of objectivity. I 100% appreciate the job Mick did for us at UC, but I'm still on the fence about how much, if any, I'll be rooting for him to do well at UCLA. However, I'm 100% rooting for Brannen to do as well or even better than Mick did. I'm dejected to understand that as well as next year, in particular, seemed to be setting up for Mick to thrive, it's probably not going to be that way under Brannen for reasons not fully under his control. But I'm eager and hopeful to see what Brannen can do anyway and I hope he has a very long and very successful tenure at UC.

Our top target that originally committed to Chris Mack and fell to Mick after Mack took the UL job? I haven't seen him rated top 150 either. Top 200 maybe. Would have been nice to have kept him but I don't think he would have played much next year even had Mick stayed.
The recruiting wasn't that great recently. Keith Williams was the last recruit to generate much excitement.

Yeah him, the guy who was a rivals 4 star when he committed and is currently ranked 119 by 247. If you haven't seen him in the top 150 it's because you haven't any effort to look. There were people early in the off-season saying Samari may be our best SG on the roster next year. And who cares if UC was his second choice? If you go after a higher rated recruit you often need some luck to get him (unless you are one of the top schools).

LoJo and Keith both generated a fair amount of buzz. Recruiting hasn't generated much excitement because people were tired of Mick and willing to show it when/where ever they could. Now that Mick's gone, many seem plenty excited by a 2-star guy.

So I ask again, why in the world do we have some people in our fanbase who are so loyal to a guy that didn't have much for them in the end? Unless you are getting your facts from Dan Cronin, I just don't see it.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but Samari's rating has plummeted in the last 6-ish months. He went from being a solid 4 star to a 3 ranked #180 and he may continue to drop although they probably won't keep re-ranking kids this close to them going to college.

Around 180 is where I've seen him ranked.

I've looked. You'll find him at around 180 on most sites. Logan Johnson was rated higher coming in and we saw how much he played. I would have liked to have seen Curtis stay with UC but I wasn't going to judge how good next years team would be based on his freshman year. That normally doesn't work out well.

The story is based on my conversation I had in Memphis with another UC donor that had a good relationship with Mick. We got on the subject of Cronin and Bohn's relationship and discussed various things (we did not talk about the alleged incident after the St Joe's tourney game, which I still don't know what happened there). When I saw the DeCourcey article a few weeks later I thought it lended more credence to our convo. I don't know it to be 100% true, I was just tired of people implying things but not actually elaborating, so I decided to actually elaborate for once.

The second part is my opinion only, and I'm talking about the 2020 class, not the 2019 class which is what you are describing. For 2020 we went after Symir Torrence half heartedly and that was pretty much it. He committed to Marquette despite us being on him early. We had a few offers go out but Cronin had developed very little relationship with many of the other guys he offered such as CJ Wilcher. I personally feel he stopped scouting with the effort that allowed him to get on guys early and develop a relationship. It is my view that we were headed towards a disaster of a 2020 class that would have set us back a few years. All of this with a brand new arena to sell along with an increased level of competition.

I liked Mick. I was happy to keep him if he was willing to tweak the small things that would allow us to go the next step. I have seen and heard nothing that ever gave me confidence he was going to do so. So I'm not sad he moved on, but I'm happy and appreciative for what he was able to do here.

Mick had better change his recruiting philosophy at UCLA or the admin/fans will lynch him before 3 years has gone by. In other words, if Mick had been able to replaced John Wooden in the late 60s and 70s, they would never had Bill Walton/Swen Nater/Pete Trgovich/Dave Myers, etc.
