ND/Purdue games likely done after 2028
"When you’re thinking of big time historic rivalries in college football, chances are the Purdue-Notre Dame in-state tilt doesn’t come to mind all that early. Despite that, the series has been a long and illustrious one between the two programs for decades upon decades.

Things might be about to end however once the pair’s upcoming six-game series has run its course in 2028 however. GoldandBlack.com talked to Boilermakers AD Mike Bobinski this week, who confirmed that the Irish are unlikely to make it back onto the team’s schedule after their contract is done.

“Notre Dame has got its own unique scheduling dynamic and philosophy,” said Bobinski. “They thought the six-game stretch that we are gonna have coming up here for the time being as all they wanted to commit to and they wanted to think about other things moving out into the ’30s.

Purdue and Notre Dame have played 84 times all told, including a stretch of every single season from after World War II up until 2014. The programs are scheduled to resume things on the gridiron with a game in 2021 in South Bend and a follow-up stretch of five games in a row beginning in 2024.

After that however, it may be quite a while before the pair faces off against each other in a non-conference game."

Bye,bye.
No game on our schedule made me more uninterested than Purdue. Give me Ball ST. or anyone else. Purdue was a classic no win game for ND, lose and you suck, win and it is no big deal.

Makes sense. The reality is that between the ACC scheduling agreement, the Stanford series, the USC series, the Navy series and the regular Shamrock Series matchups, it makes it tremendously difficult for Notre Dame to schedule any long-term agreement with any program outside of the current window. Frankly, I'm surprised they got a six-year deal done with Purdue when they did.

From Purdue's perspective, I would think they would also want more winnable games outside of conference.

Let's see. The ACC plays 8 conference games. The NCAA schedule is for 12.
12 minus USC, minus, Stanford, minus Navy, minus Shamrock series = 8. Makes you think doesn't it TerryD?

Play the MAC.

Tough enough to give ND a workout but not tough enough to win. For a MAC school it's a super bowl.

Good MAC teams have gone into Purdue and won though.

ND really only has room for 2 B1G games and Michigan/Michigan St are bigger rivals as ND’s participated in legendary games against both.

The ND/Purdue 2020’s games should be a lot of fun with Brohm at the helm. Hope/Hazell turned Purdue into a MAC program for a decade (NIU won there by 31). Props Boilermakers fans for hanging on through that dark decade.

ND played Ball State once and likely never again.

My beef with the Purdue series was always with their fans.

It will not hurt my feelings if ND never plays them again.

I dislike the upcoming six game series, but Swarbrick never consults me on stuff.

Purdue probably the closest school to Notre Dame, but they will quit playing them. Navy is the annual game that makes no sense (although I understand the history).

Notre Dame has moved out of its traditional Chicago-Boston territory with their move to the ACC (despite the few NE schools in the ACC).

I'm guessing UC would be willing to play Purdue some more (we spanked them in 2013 and 2016). Its only a 2.75 hour trip between the two schools.

Yes, but you are forgetting the "big-time" home/home game that ND has been scheduling over the past several years, as well as have scheduled into the future (UCLA, Washington, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, Michigan, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Alabama). That gets you up to nine games (and probably doesn't include years where the Shamrock Series is not an ACC program). Very quickly, you lose all flexibility in maintaining the freedom that Notre Dame values (and will continue to have).

Over the next decade, replacing Purdue as the "Midwest" buy-game, are Bowling Green, Western Michigan, Toledo, Cincinnati and Marshall. There's no way that Purdue would relegate itself to become a buy-game from ND, after the history of games played between the programs.

I realize that many on here don't like, and most of whom probably don't even understand it, but Notre Dame values its flexibility and maneuverability in creating a national schedule. Not even Michigan and Michigan State are able to keep their annual series going, although I have much more confidence that they will still play each other a handful of times per decade to keep that going (and not Purdue).

Based on history, you'd think that if there was one Big Ten team Notre Dame would want to continue playing more often than any other, it's Michigan State. No idea how ND fans feel about that, though.

It's a shame that Irish scheduling desires have destroyed their old Big Ten rivalries. These used to be must watch games in September. No matter which Big Ten school you rooted for you backed whoever was playing ND.

Agreed. The motley amalgamation of ACC schools that they have zero historical ties with has harmed the Irish schedule. Purdue and MSU should be annual games, and Michigan two years on and two years off, to keep it special.

Then again, as someone else said in this thread, nobody at Notre Dame cares, or is even aware of, what i think.

Purdue can now add other ACC schools for home and away contracts. VT, Syracuse, BC, Pitt, UNC, NC State, Duke, Miami, etc., and when ND and Purdue are not in a big bowl game the bowl games can match them.
