New Turf - Legion Field (Updated)
https://www.al.com/news/2019/05/city-wan...field.html

Quote:Birmingham wants to have new NCAA and FIFA-compliant turf at Legion Field by the end of August, said Councilor William Parker, who serves on the Parks and Recreation Board...

The bid date is set for May 14. The bidder must be a International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) licensee and FIFA Preferred.

The city has set the project to begin on May 27 and be complete by August 23 to ensure it’s complete before football season. The project will include removing the existing turf, infield, goal posts and goal posts footings and replacing it with new turf

How long has current field been there? I assume even though we're leaving, others like MCC, ASU, AAM, Miles, etc will still be using it on odd occasion so depending on age of field will need to be replaced just not for us.

I know our players complain about getting carpet burn when playing at LF

RE: New Turf - Legion Field
The turf at Legion has been subpar for years. I remember being able to find patches where there was almost not 'grass' and just big patches of the black rubber bits that make up the 'sediment' layer. Not great, especially if we're pushing to become a soccer town.

There wont be any National team games with turf. They can forget that. All national team matches are played on grass.
The new turf is needed though if they plan to use the stadium for other events outside of UAB football once we move. Lots of money going into that old grey lady considering not a lot will be done there in the future.

The field turf was put down in 2006. It was supposed to last 8-10 years and is overdue to be replaced.

Not completely true. Although rare, the USMNT has played on turf. The USWNT does it more commonly. It’s also not very rare for them to lay temporary grass over turf for the USMNT.

Either way, it makes no sense to me to dump money into that place when there will be a brand new high end facility right down the road

Except that some events, such as the Magic City Classic, won't play in the downtown stadium for a variety of reasons(history & tradition, size, tailgating, etc). The Magic City Classic will easily pay for the cost of Legion Field's upkeep.

I still think it’s dumb. Can’t see how I’ll be convinced otherwise

Bigger events, like the Magic City Classic, Their going to run the two Stadiums Simatamiously. One Weekend with that, can make a Season. Nascar works one or two weekends for the entire year. That's probably why.

You may call it a Dump of a place but its special to a lot of Historians with much tradition fill the toilets with paper and next with the food, The Magic City Classic calls it home, should have a car show out their with all that parking. Lots of the Neighborhood has made a living their for years selling peanunts, Birmingham will not let the Legion go for any reason. That's Why, Theirs always something that can be done with the Field Legion Field.

As long as it is Structrealy Sound. If knot take it apart.

I would get the Core of Enginers out their before, I played their.

RE: New Turf - Legion Field
We will play somewhere between 12 and 14 games in Legion Field over the next 19 months, so as far as what the city plans to do with it, I'm going to channel Rhett Butler- quite frankly, I don't give a damn. Blow it up and pave over it, plate it in 24 carat gold, paint it pink if you want. Not going to be our problem, so I've got as much interest in the future of Legion Field as I have in the price of tea in China.

since Birmingham has such a strong history of making sound financial decisions that pan out well over the long term, i guess i'll just trust them to continue to do so

Doesn't seem to make financial sense, but at least we'll get the benefit of new turf for the next two seasons.
