There are times I miss Memphis, but it is undoubtedly the most racist place I've ever lived. And not in the way most people think.

probably the reason they brought your being a racist into the thread is that you constantly have bad things to say about black public figures, maybe it is a coincidence but the trend is unmistakable . 03-idea

I take a position against those whom i disagree with based on substance, not my fault that their racial makeup is as it is. Steve "Chicken Little" Cohen is not black but I have taken a strong stance against him. Darrel Wallace Jr is black and I have come out in strong support of him. Do not paint me with a broad brush because of others obsession with race. Race NEVER comes into play in any of my posts unless someone else raises the issue first.

But you must admit a guy who himself proposes the city changes the name of a street to honor him????? That has to be one egotistical SOB.

YEP kind of like naming a Tower after yourself.

Well, in all fairness, if you BUILT said tower, I (and most people) have no problem with that. Plus (if you ARE referring to Mr. Trump), that is not a publicly owned and maintained property.

So, in conclusion, apples and pears.

Maybe he meant Wilder.

So true. Go on a trip to....anywhere. You'll see the difference quickly upon returning. Hate is stirred-up here for individual gain.....getting politicians elected, hiring, goofy back alley deals such as the historical parks being sold for pennies on the dollar in the name of racism. Sad.

There's mostly good in Memphis tho! A lot of character, love, good food and BASKETBALL. Not to mention we have college football in a BIG way these days too!

You know I hear that a lot from people connected to or living around Memphis but that is not the national perception I see, hear or read about. I get around a lot. No doubt we have our issues but the good news is most of the talk about racism in Memphis is mostly just that. Where several cities see other expressions.

I hear Boston, Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, NY a lot. I found about 20 articles, blogs, reports on racism and not one mentioned Memphis although the Northeast and the south are geographic regions that get tagged alot.

Here is a sampling of what I found and why aeras get tagged as racists. One is by Google rankings that counts the number of times the N word is dropped. It ain't science. One way to combat it is to not let friends, family, or even sports message boards get away with using any code words, jokes, generalizations or marginalizations about any race. Every race has at least one demeaning word as a descriptor and none of them are productive, even if you use them about your own race.

First on-line reference:
“Portland, Oregon, known for its rainy weather, award-winning restaurants, hipsters, and all things Pacific Northwest, hides a very dark secret in plain sight – Portland, Oregon, is the whitest, and arguably, one of the most racist cities in America.”

Second on-line reference
1. Birmingham. I have never been to Birmingham, but I knew I needed a Southern representative, and that the Southern representative would probably deserve to top this list. I verified Birmingham with Spencer Hall. He said, "We're talking about operant racism? So…Birmingham." Birmingham it is.
2. Boston. Of course, Boston has to be near the top of this list. I actually knew a handful of people from Quincy, Mass. One of them referred to black people as "colored" people. And it wasn't an innocent thing. I think he genuinely liked how it sounded when he said it.
3. Phoenix. Lots of old people in Phoenix. Old people are crazy racist. And not only are old people racist, but old people have ACQUIRED RACISM. They may not start out life racist. They don't even have to have racist parents. But then, one day, they get rear-ended by an Asian lady in the parking lot and now they hate ALL Asians. Acquired racism is the most dangerous racism of all, because those are people who believe they have facts backing up their prejudices. Also, gun nuts and bikers are here.
I also wanted to include Los Angeles on this list because LA has the whole immigrant issue, along with dipshit skatepark kids who love to casually drop the N-bomb because they think it sounds cool. Those N-bombs that Quentin Tarantino personally drops in Pulp Fiction are the perfect example. There really are racist little ***** like that in LA.
4. New York. This counts the entire metropolitan area, which means you have a healthy combination of Upper East Side socialites who fear minorities and the obvious goomba Sal's Famous Pizzeria worker faction. Two kinds of racism for your dollar.
5. Cincinnati. Like Geoff said, riots.
Honorable mention to Detroit, along with EVERY CITY IN THE SOUTH. I welcome you to challenge these rankings and add your own entries down in the bowels of the discussion section.

Third on-line reference
The apartment search website Abodo created a map outlining the most racist areas in the nation. The site used software that tracked over 12 million tweets posted in 2014 and 2016, filtering out tweets with racial slurs.
Based on these findings, West Virginia was revealed to be the most racist state. Maryland and Louisiana were also found to be the most racist states based on racial slurs used on Twitter.
Another study was conducted by data scientist Seth Stephens-Davidowitz using Google search data. Based on this data, the study found that the most racist regions in the United States are the rural Northeast and South. Searches containing racial slurs were most prevalent in the Appalachian region from Georgia to New York and Vermont. High concentrations of racist searches were discovered in areas along the Gulf Coast, the Upper Peninsula region in Michigan, and the state of Ohio.
