B-b-but, the Great Northern!
More seriously, I think they should have gone with 4 protected opponents per team. Then Idaho and Idaho State could play every year, as could EWU and Montana. See the schedule for 4 protected opponents here: https://csnbbs.com/thread-824495-post-15...id15671059

I mean Montana, Montana State, Idaho and the flavor of the month is suppose to be headed to the Summit League.

Well, that is NOW happening in 2025 when the current Playoff contract expires. The Great Northern will become an automatic member of the now G6/Access Bowl club, because the 4.3 million residents of the Dakotas/Montana and Idaho are too valuable a market to pass up.

If the Great Northern was going to be a thing it needed to have happened in 2012ish and be called the WAC.

Looking back and thinking about Idaho’s situation, I can see where the Vandals weren’t too hot on renewing the in-state rivalry with Idaho State. For one, Pocatello is an extremely long distance from Moscow, Idaho. If you’re curious about how much that distance is look at the distance from Pullman or Spokane, Washington to Pocatello, Idaho. Moscow is within walking distance of Pullman, Washington, so if you can’t find Moscow, Idaho, just look for Pullman, Washington and find the distance between that and Pocatello. Then too, Idaho really felt gut-punched when they moved back down to FCS. Yes, they were overwhelmed in FBS, but they (Idaho) are still the state of Idaho’s flagship university. Having to retreat from FBS to FCS while rival Boise is still FBS and thriving was a huge blow to many Vandal boosters’ pride. So, I can see why Idaho picked the permanent opponents that they did.

Idaho State is also in the "Mormon Corner" part of the State -- Idaho is often described as three States in one, with UI being the "North" or "Panhandle" part of the State, of the Palouse (includes much of Western Washington), Boise State in the South Central and the Capitol with the only real city of any size, and ISU in the Southeast Corner, which is easily Mormon majority (the Panhandle around 1-2%). Idaho State's chief rival is Weber State, which is the closest school, and a public school in a similar Mormon dominated region.
A map I found might help in understanding the social geography relating to Idaho State
Idaho definitely likes having EWU (at least close enough and a "proxy" for WSU to hate) and Montana as rivals, and it there would be a 3rd it'd be Montana State. Idaho State is just not on the radar.

RE: Big Sky Releases 2020-2023 FB schedules
I can back up Stugray's post. Even when we were in the Big Sky the first time around, there was no rivalry with Idaho State. I'd be willing to bet the majority of people living within 100 miles of Moscow have never been within 100 miles of Pocatello and vice versa. We don't know each other and we don't care.
If we need to pretend to have "rivals" in the Big Sky, Montana actually kinda is one, and while few of us care about EWU one way or the other they're at least close. But honestly, I don't even know how one would start a rivalry with EWU. I've lived very near what should be their alumni base for most of my life, and I've seen very little evidence that EWU alumni even exist. You can't trash talk what you can't see.
