Brannen's first month
I really like CBJ, and believe he can right this ship, but it is becoming pretty clear that he was not simply going to take the torch and keep what Mick had going. It looks like next year may be decent to average or even a total rebuild (If Jarron leaves), JB is going to have the build this thing his own way from scratch.
I think I am also starting to realize that our AD is simply broke and not what we think it is, and we have zero brand/image to carry us through this kind of transition. I blame some of that on Mick for never trying to build that and part of the reason our AD is poorly funded.
This is the reason I was pushing for a coach like Pitino who could immediately come in and grab some recruits and a couple big time assistants. I am positive JB is burning the midnight oil and turning over every last stone to get him an assistant, but the fact is he doesn't carry the weight to get who he wants. He is going to have to get creative. Hopefully the reasons things are moving so slow is he is being very deliberate.

RE: Brannen's first month
My biggest concern is that UC’s brand isn’t what is used to be. I tend to believe the basketball roster actually is hurting recruiting because if Cumberland does return there isn’t a lot of playing time for 2019 guys. I do expect UC to get a few new addition before the season.
Back to UC’s brand. There seemingly is a disconnect between the athletic department and the fan base. The fans wants banners in the arena, Jordan era basketball uniforms, and more traditional presentation at basketball games. We don’t want the cartoon Bearcats uniforms, zero band and student engagement, and the most boring in game atmosphere in major college basketball. It’s swag with tradition. Other schools do it but UC must think that boring amd dumb uniforms, loud music, and only scant mentions of tradition is what works.
Walking into the new arena you would never how many times UC has been into the NCAA tournament. Maybe we could put up actual Kenyon or Oscar jersey in prominent spot for the players to see when the enter the arena. Maybe a list of Bearcats in the NBA can be highlighted somewhere besides the practice gym, which is something I believe Mick actually fought for.
For an historical proud program, UC seems to downplay everything they used be. Embrace Oscar, Huggins, Kenyon, and SK. Embrace all eras of UC basketball.

Totally agree. I again contribute this to the 13 years of being Micked. Mick never brought former players back, and constsntly pounded the the drum about us not being able to achieve great things and we should be happy. I think he sort of created this reality, and now we have fans saying "Mick set the bar high". But in reality the bar was only high for Mick.

RE: Brannen's first month
Mick screwed around until late in the game, leaving little time for the next coach to assemble a staff and begin recruiting. UC will likely sag next season, but that often happens in a transition. What matters is what Brannen can do once his full staff is on board and he starts targeting kids that fit his system.
What matters to me is the motivation behind hiring the coach...with hiring Huggins, the motivation was...let's win ASAP
With Cronin the motivation was....let's, above all else, run a clean program
With Brannen...we have yet to see....I hope the motivation wasn't...."he's cheap and local"
Wait and see.

RE: Brannen's first month
I'm not ready to "go there" yet based on jarr's OP. I want this thing to play out a bit more before rendering judgments. I think there's too much in flux right now to know for sure.
I do agree that the arena should feature our program's history/success more visibly. I love the info and player art that hangs in the practice gym.
Also, for those of you that spend your hard earned dollars on tickets please let the AD office know your feelings. They're not going to change a thing if there is zero feedback from the fans.

I think the motivation was let’s win in March, score points, and play modern basketball. It might take a few years to remake the team but Mick had 13 years to take the next step and blew in 2018. He could have been a hero if they don’t choke away the Nevada game. He should have beat Ohio State but autobenched Jarron, so the opening night was forever ruined.

I just wish they could have bumped JBs assistant pool a little more. There was clearly money saved between Micks buyout and reduced salary for a new coach. There should have been enough money for JB to go and get someone like Pettway which could have made his transition alot smoother. This goes back to my fear that UC AD is having pretty big financial issues.

Judas Priest... Are we even gonna let Brannen fill out the staff and roster before we give up on next season, the basketball program, and the future of our AD overall?

We are rather calm over here compared to BCJ and bearcattalk. I think most on this forum we’re tired of Mick.

Yep, BCJ is mostly still drooling over Mick and still mourning his loss. My post in no way a shot at JB, simply stating the circumstances he is in and why. Hopefully he can make good out of it.

Nope. We need at least 10 more threads like this one.

Player loses are common in a coaching change.
Note hiring a staff is not.

Yeah, this is the yellow flag for me. He's been on the job for over three weeks, and hasn't hired an assistant coach yet. That seems odd.

Two weeks ago, it was reported that Brannen had hired an assistant who was with him at NKU, Sean Dwyer.

I, for one, like to judge my coaching hires on how they do in the first month of the offseason, not March.
April is the new March. #firebrannen
