Monday Musings May
After a short lay off, I am back with the Monday Musings. Will probably be monthly until August unless a Bombshell hits Ypsilanti.

Spring Game went well no one got hurt. I like the idea of seating in the new football building in the North End zone. Wonder how much wind it will block as Rynearson and the Big "O" are notoriously windy especially on Cold days.

More on Football. I think the lynchpin game is the WMU game. We have lost to them the last two years in close games and really need a Win here to propel to the top tier of the MAC West. A Loss to the Fighting Oberons would mean what again?

I am also worried about week 1 down in the Swamp of Conway South Carolina against the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina. It will be Hot and Humid hope we are in shape.

Interesting rumor on Murphy but no smoke to that fire.

Thomspon Block building was painted, but what are we going to do about parking in Depot Town? The Parking lot is atrocious and always full.

That is all for the slow months of College Football Athletics

Finally, It was a Foul on Maximum Security. IF War of Will didn't have a great Jockey Horse Racing might have ended as we know it Saturday.

RE: Monday Musings May
I did think of the issue of wind, maybe wind swirls, etc.

My first hunch was to consider the current layout kind of a 'horseshoe' although it isn't a true one.

It would be crazy if the winds on the field are minimized by the new building, but north winds above the building to cause whatever on punts and kickoffs.

We'll see although was enough of the building up to effect passing and kicking for the spring game?

Move the touchdown terrace (beer) down to the field level at the south end between the field and track.

Wonder what the ROTC cannon will do to the new windows.

I frequent Depot Town and parking does suck. Nice problem to have though. That area is very popular.

EMU brilliant idea: Put the most expensive seating in the least desirable viewing location at Rynearson.

Nobody ever said, "I have great end zone seats. Too bad you have to sit at midfield."

That's not true...

The most expensive seating is in the suites at midfield.

And the view from the end zones aren't that great...

RE: Monday Musings May
since LJM... has started the thought process...

IF EMU had the money, they should ripout the existing press box/suites and replace with something new.

I would build them into the stands (that is remove say the top 10 rows of seats on the west wide stands. That would put the suits closer to the field and also remove some seating (a good idea).

Dear steve,
We have already removed seats (although maybe only temporary) with the tarps covering seats on the East side of the stadium.
Why would we want to remove seats on the home side of Rynearson?

The reason isn't to reduce seats per se, but to locate the press box/suites lower into what are the the area where the new seating is.

The idea is to get the press box and suites closer to the field. What I'm suggesting would move the press box and suites about 20 feet lower and about 20 closer to the field.

Yikes. Really painful for UDM. They aren't even eligible to play in the conference tournament.

Moaining and Musing in May...

Looks like Oakland will lose a player to UofM. As we've indicated that the Grad Transfer rule is now allowing Mid Major to become happy hunting grounds for the High Majors.

So we have top prospects moving from Mid Majors to High Majors and those who are not good fits at High Majors move down.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports...151209001/

Seeing what I see now, if I were a mid major coach I would be very cautious about redshirting for reasons which should be obvious.

The only thing which can't be changed is players who transfer and sit out a year and they could have a big senior year and graduate transfer.

True, but it messes up the Horizon League tourney and gives the school at blackeye.

For sure Steve. From a transactional point of view redshirting makes little sense in today's NCAA environment. I am still one of Creighton's biggest fans but he might have to reassess his practice.

Agree, but transfers are much more of a problem in MBB where many teams lose say 2, 3 or 4 players to transfer per year.

RE: Monday Musings May
We lost a fine punter two years ago to grad transfer. The coaches resorted to rugby style. So instead of gaining field position on exchange of punts, we routinely lost position. It cost us tremendously. We lost a bunch of close games that could have easily turned on field position. It probably cost us a winning record.

Steve you are as usual correct about the transfer issue being more prevalent in MBB. Basketball, however, has always been the trendsetter with regards to these things. It was not that long ago when you were only eligible for the NFL draft if you had spent 4 years in college while the NBA had actually tightened up their previous standard of drafting Lebron James and Kevin Garnett out of high school to the now one and done we have today.

CMU lost Michael Danna, an all MAC defensive end to Harbaugh for this fall. Mad Maxx, bless his heart chose the NFL rather than agonizing us by choosing to play his senior year at a Power 5 school. Sutton Smith did the same at NIU.

Speaking in transactional terms only, I would as a head coach, use the redshirt very sparingly. We could have gotten another year from Maxx after all. From an altruistic Chris Creighton viewpoint, however, I realize that the redshirt year allows an incoming freshman to adapt to the college environment and bulk up physically as well. Tough call, I can see both sides for sure.
