DerMarr on Brannen
From the Athletic ($$)
https://theathletic.com/960343/2019/05/0...-bearcats/
Quote:You got to sit in on a practice after John Brannen was hired. I’m curious what your early impressions are of him and how much you’ve gotten to interact with him?
I was impressed. I didn’t know him, but all I heard was good things. But then I went to practice and he was on it. He took control early. A lot of the stuff he was showing those guys was pro stuff, stuff that I learned. I had to learn a lot from Mick these past few seasons because I have more of an NBA mind. I was one-and-done in college and the game is a little different, especially the way Mick plays it. The way Brannen is going to play it, it’s more of a pro style, the way he was showing guys to space the floor and all that. We’ll score more, I believe, with Brannen. A lot of spacing. I’ve been telling these guys the past few years to get to the corners, but they were too busy trying to run, get hand-offs, get the ball and end up too close to each other, not spacing. So Coach Brannen put Xs on the floor and made them run to the Xs, sprint to the corner and keep the floor open. That’s more of what I was used to doing, so that’s good for those guys. It would be great if Cane (Broome) had another year.

RE: DerMarr on Brannen
Always felt under Cronin we were playing outdated full contact basketball from the 1990’s and early 2000’s. Cronin is a young coach but he coaches like an older coach would due to who he worked for.
The style can work with the right talent and can at times be extremely effective at keeping you in the game against a more talented team.
The problem is that in March everyone plays hard so shot making and play making is what matters the most.

Wow, a former player who bothered to stop by a practice or game instead of taking to Twitter to piss all over the program.

I really like DerMarr Johnson. I hope he continues to be involved with the program.

I'm extremely impressed he came back for his degree. I can't imagine there are many one and dones with degrees. Hope he sticks around if he's hoping to stay in basketball.

This is so dead on from DerMarr:
“I’ve been telling these guys the past few years to get to the corners, but they were too busy trying to run, get hand-offs, get the ball and end up too close to each other, not spacing.”
Bingo
SOOO glad Coach Brannen is our coach.

I hope CJB will keep him engaged with our team and I don't know if he's eligible but if there's mutual interest what a great opportunity to be a part of the coaching staff moving forward. DerMarr would be a "bridge" between the old and the new Cats.

Totally agree. I lot of respect for a guy that comes back to school to earn a degree and help the basketball program. Would like to see him stick around.

I guess I'll be surprised if DerMarr doesn't get a role of some kind with the new basketball staff. Presumably, he's already living here, is familiar with the current players, has the NBA pedigree and now the UC diploma. From all outward appearances it would seem he checks a lot of boxes for us.
But it's also Brannen's decision and I'll respect his choices in such matters.

bulldog mentioned that heads would turn if both DerMarr and CJB walked into a high school gym together because they're both so tall. So I'm sold.

maybe Brannen could make DerMarr Johnson his first assistant hired at UC. I'd be fine with that. Sounds like he could teach things to the players.

Agreed.
Mick is a college guy, and what CJB is bringing to the table is absolutely more aligned with the pro game.
That said, who knows how it'll play out on this level. One thing for sure tho, I am so happy to see. i suspect we're in for a higher basketball IQ team, play calling, and so on.
