Of course I have the good sense not to go posting this on the AAC board knowing what nuclear backlash I would receive from the Memphisians on there.

Memphis has had more than its fair share of run-ins with the the NCAA under previous coaches. But I can't say that Penny is doing anything outside the rules in this recruiting cycle given his network and the value his name brings to their brand.

If the Tigers are preseason #5, to me that does nothing but good for the American. If the conference is consistently getting 3, 4 or 5 teams ranked, it reinforces the "major seven" language that ESPN uses and it suggests this conference is as good or better than the new Big East. In fact, I expect ESPN to hype the American a bit more this coming season with a billion dollar commitment to the conference.

Call me a cynic again, but... Rick Pitino had to pay to get guys.

Good point. Yes, he did. And this part isn't directed at you, but at other people who may not understand how high level recruiting works...

Virtually EVERYONE that pulls in many top 100 recruits is paying them some amount, and absolutely every top 25 recruit is being offered huge amounts of cash by a number of programs.

"But (insert blue blood) doesn't NEED to offer money to attract recruits!"

Wrong... the blue bloods might not have to pay a player to pull them away from somewhere like Tulsa or Tulane, but they ABSOLUTELY DO have to pay players to keep them away from other blue bloods and high majors. That's just how it works.

I would bet my life that Memphis is paying their recruits... and you know what? I don't blame them. Penny is just doing what literally everyone else pulling in that caliber of talent is doing.

NCAA basketball is a cesspool of corruption nearly as putrid as professional boxing. Both are beautiful to watch, and both are in perennial danger of self-destruction at the hands of all the assorted slimy agents, greasy handlers, shameless grifters and so on. Anyone who doubts their influence in the game is willfully ignorant.

Yup. And from what I can tell just in the stories surround Mick's departure, he was met with open wallets when he landed at UCLA. He basically said he couldn't believe all the $UPPORT that there was around the program. This is something UC hasn't had in a long time.

Because UC made horrible decisions and is broke. Better hope Brannen wins quickly or the cataclysmic tipping point will be near. Broke schools cant afford mistakes!

So it's UC's fault [or empty wallets] that Mick couldn't sniff the S16 but once in 13 seasons?

Mick is a mediocre coach who gets mediocre results. Our wallets are not open to that.

I’ll have to agree. You never can tell with new talent and Penny hasn’t had to deal with a lot of big player egos. But I did like what I saw from his 1st year of coaching, so I’m optimistic.

Disclaimer: it's a joke. I understand he's been to tons of games yadda yadda yadda, supporter for years etc.

UC chose to be left out of the P5? I never knew.

If only we were as sharp as those forward thinkers at Rutgers and built UC near NYC.

What did you like about his first year? From an outside perspective he took over a senior laden team returning almost all of it's top players and despite that they had no improvement from the previous year.

If you ask me, Penny is still unproven coaching wise. But his first season did nothing to make me think he's going to be a great coach.

Well he has more top 100 kids coming in to one class than Mick got in 13 years at UC, which included recruiting to UC in the Big East.
There’s that.

Memphis just landed maybe the best grad transfer on the market, Rayjon Tucker. 20pt, 7 reb, 41%3. From ArkLR. Also just landed Lester Quinnose (top 60 recruit)

Still heavy favorites for Precious Achuwa and RJ Hampton. That team is going to be loaded.

That’s a lot of mouths to feed. Not everyone can have the ball in their hands.
