He left because he knew he was not up to the challenge going forward and UC (quite rightly) refused to give him a long term deal. He found a sucker in UCLA when they wiffed on literally every other candidate. He will not last out his contract in Westwood but he he should be set for life as long as Dan didn't steer him into too many bad bets.

Cronin left because UC made it clear that they wanted him to. He went to UCLA because it's a step up, even if he was their 20th choice. UC has gambled that it could do better and came up with John Brannen from NKU. He seems like a good coach and was ready to move up to this level and he steps into a good job here in a lot ways, so it could work out. But your version of things is a hilarious fantasy.

RE: Memphis preseason #5
Whatever success he had last year, he did it was 5 seniors starting and Jeremiah Martin shooting like the Harlem Globetrotters.

Now he has to start from scratch.

Sure he's got some highly rated recruits, but you just don't roll the ball out there and win.

Even cheatin' John, who's been doing this one and done superteam thing for years, usually doesn't even really start to get his teams together until late January or so.

There's more to this team chemistry thing than these one-n-done proponents are wiling to admit.

He left because he wasn’t up to the challenge of AAC...but then goes to the challenge of a perennially better conference?

Where he got the long term deal UC refused to offer. He'll be gone in 3-4 yrs. cashing in a large check to go away in shame.

Actually, for the last few years the AAC has been a better basketball conference than the PAC-12, and the trajectories of both indicate that situation will continue for awhile.

I mean they brought the entire roster back (including the best scorer in the league) from a team that finished 5th in the aac and made the aac semis... and finished 5th in the aac and made the aac semis. He inherited a good situation with an experienced team.

He seems to be recruiting like crazy. I'm not ready to say he can coach them to an elite level. We'll see.

To be fair, Tubby Smith is the one who coached them to 5th in 2017-18.

I thought the story on Tubby has always been that he's a terrible recruiter, but a pretty good coach (am I wrong on that?). I mean, the dude DID win a national title with a roster that included zero lottery picks and only 1 guy who got drafted that year (Nazr Mohammed, who wasn't exactly a dominant college player). So if Penny can coach as good as Tubby, the rest of the conference better watch out.

Also, the conference was deeper in 2018/19 than in 2017/18. The conference won 15 more OOC games in 18/19 (120-50 in 18/19 vs 105-49 in 17/18), and was more than a full point better in Sagarin ratings. 7 teams won 22 or more games in 18/19, compared to only 4 with 20 or more wins in 2017/18. The conference got 4 NCAA bids, 2 NIT bids, and 1 CBI bid in 2019. We only got 3 NCAA bids and 1 NIT bid in 2018.

All fair and good points. I will also say Memphis should have been improved from 2018 to last year and despite nearly identical conference results they were measurably improved. I think last year was solid from penny and his staff but just wanted to stress tubby left him what should have been a top 5 conference team and that's exactly where they finished. I'll be interested to see penny with his own guys and how he does getting them to fit. He'll clearly have talent.

I feel like this assessment is fair. I think it's hard to make assumptions in this case b/c of coaching turnover however.

As much as I was anti-Mick, I think it's entirely reasonable to expect a dip in outcome for our Cats this season - even if Brooks and everyone else - came back. Moving to a new system takes time, and there's a lot of room for hiccups to occur.

I feel as though last year was marginally a win for Penny. As previously noted - for Penny to achieve on par with a grizzled coaching vet like, Tubby, is impressive.

He will have more talent (and egos) to deal with this year, but I expect them to do well. Top 5? Nah. I can't see that, but they'll be a favorite to win the conference

This

Well I guess that makes sense. It's sorta similar to Mick's early days playing in the best conference the sport has ever seen.

The group that whined for years about wanting Cronin gone is blasting him for leaving. LOL.

Reading comprehension not your long suit, huh?

I'm glad UC let (if not maybe even encouraged Mick to) leave. I just find it hilarious that all of his apologists around here can't help but keep making excuses for him. Not to mention wax poetic about his future at UCLA.

I'm not making excuses for Mick nor do I really mind that he left. I'm pointing out how ridiculous it is to say that he left Cincinnati because he was no longer up to the challenge.

So CBS thinks Penny will do as much or more with his collection of one and dones as HOF coaches Coach K and Coach Cal do? I'm skeptical.

Maybe he left because Bohn finally manned up and told him his AAC championships and a dollar will buy a cup of coffee and that unless we see March results, he's gone.

Agreed. Even a top 25 ranking would be a bit generous to an unproven coach, but top 5? That's crazy.

Call me a cynic, but I can't help but believe that these programs that go from nothing much to instantly raking in these super classes have to be cheating their @$$es off.

Of course I have the good sense not to go posting this on the AAC board knowing what nuclear backlash I would receive from the Memphisians on there.

Memphis has had more than its fair share of run-ins with the the NCAA under previous coaches. But I can't say that Penny is doing anything outside the rules in this recruiting cycle given his network and the value his name brings to their brand.

If the Tigers are preseason #5, to me that does nothing but good for the American. If the conference is consistently getting 3, 4 or 5 teams ranked, it reinforces the "major seven" language that ESPN uses and it suggests this conference is as good or better than the new Big East. In fact, I expect ESPN to hype the American a bit more this coming season with a billion dollar commitment to the conference.
