Exactly ... and IMO there are two reasons for that. First, because it's great, and second, because we get SO LITTLE of it as it is.

The college football season is easily the shortest season of all the major sports. It starts circa September 1st and ends circa January 1st, just four months.

But really, it's significantly short than that, because unless you make your CCG and/or the CFP playoffs, you get one game in December, your bowl game. And a lot of teams don't even get that.

So effectively, the real season is just three months, September/October/November, with a gap to the one game in December.

Then we get to wait 8, or sometimes 9, long months before it starts again.

I think what makes it great is the pure diversity of the college game. You have teams who run "pro-style", read option, air raid, wishbone, flexbone, etc. Teams play tough defense, some little to no defense. It's FUN to watch. Plus, you don't have nearly as much of the diva stuff from players.

You're right about being so little of it, that's why people show up for spring games by the thousands. Absence makes the heart grow fonder I guess.

20 Team Playoff
1 Auto bid for every FBS conference (minimum 10 members, each must give a total of 250 Full Ride Scholarships with FCOA to all to qualify)
10 At-larges

Remaining Teams fill into bowls however the bowls want - conferences are free to get as many affiliations as desired, no restrictions on record (must play minimum 10 FBS games to be eligible)

If the Myrtle Beach Bowl wants to get 5-7 South Carolina to play 6-6 Virginia Tech, let the ticket sales decide.

Dback you are smart enough to know a 20 team playoff will never happen

1) A Maximum Limit in Bowl Games of 30. There are 130 FBS teams, half of that is 65, two teams in each game means 32.5 games. Round down to an even number...I'd go with 30. There's NO reason why more than half of FBS teams should be playing in a Bowl Game.

2) To be eligible to play in a Bowl Game, you MUST have a winning record...AGAINST FBS competition. The "FCS games" would no longer count towards a "winning record," and 6-6 would not cut it either.

3) Games can be sponsored by corporations, but MUST have a trophy they play for. No more "Taxslayer.com" bowls. I'm good with "The Nokia Sugar Bowl" or the "Liberty Bowl by FedEx." Bring back the "Citrus Bowl." Bring back the "Chic-fil-A Peach Bowl." I'm OK with a "City" Name, but make a trophy out of it that allows the Champion to play for.

4) Make the main, "Grandstand" seating section available to the participating Universities to allot and sell to their fans. I get it, these things are businesses. But the main stands, ought to be available for the Schools to sell. As it is, if you buy tickets through your school, you're likely to end up in some section in a corner of an upper bowl... If you buy your tickets through a secondary vendor, you can end up somewhere nicer. That leaves schools struggling to sell their allotments and incurring major penalties. And, in some games, it means that the camera makes it look almost empty even if the school brought a decent fan base. The games "SHOULD" be about the schools involved...free up the good seats for the programs involved!

LOVE #2 and #3. LIKE #4. Just don't care about #1.

I like it. Unforunately the 40 bowl cap we want probably isn't happening with the Los Angeles Bowl and Fenway Park Bowl all but official.

Probably worth moving the Fresno game to LA. And the Poinsettia was a good bowl, but it isn't coming back.

RE: What would you change to bowl season?
A 5-1-3 Playoff that begins around New Years with the NY6.

Beyond that, reducing the number of bowls to around 30 and raising the qualifications to 7 wins.

NY10: Rose, LV, Cotton, Alamo, Sugar, Peach, Gator, Citrus, Orange.

All FBS champs go to an access bowl. Top 16 access for independents.

7-5 record required to be bowl eligible but interpreted liberally so if you average as a conference 6.1 seven win teams you can have 7 slots. 6-6 teams then get picked in accordance with APR.

I'm okay with a few access bowls on New Years Day and such for the other 4 G5 conference champions that don't make it in the playoff, but no new bowl games and I feel like 8 is the perfect playoff amount to maintain regular season importance and a playoff that isn't too long. I just think the importance of regular season is greatly diminished with 16 teams.

An 8 team playoff should consist of a Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange, Fiesta, Peach, College Football Championship (rotation among sites) bowls. An 8 team playoff needs 7 games so keep the NY6 (Dec. 29-Jan 1. for QFs, January 5-8 SFs, January 12-15 NC depending on dates).

I agree on the dates.

A CFP expansion would be a good thing for some of those bowls now locked out of the first tier.

It might make sense to bid all of the bowl game under one postseason contract instead of piecemeal to drive up valuations.

That would be more fun it would be like March Madness during the Christmas season. The NFL playoff seems to work pretty well also. I just don’t understand how the FCS, D2/3, NFL, CFL, College Baseball, College Basketball, and all the other college sports can have playoffs, as it is seemed as impossible to do at the FBS level. :)

The only thing I'd change is to try and spread out the games throughout the month of December. Last year they didn't start until December 15. The earlier bowls are usually the "smaller" ones, why not start the week after the CCG's? Bids for the NYD games and the CFP would be after the championship games, but why wait for the others? Announce the early games after the end of the regular season which would still give teams 2 weeks or more to prepare. And while they're at it, throw a few "local" games in during the week, would beat watching reruns and Christmas specials.

FBS *could* have a 24-team playoff, they just don't *want* one.

Which is totally reasonable, given that the foundational principle of FBS is "No Playoffs". FBS was founded in 1978 by those schools and conferences that did not want to participate in NCAA-sponsored playoffs. FCS was created just for that purpose, and the FBS conferences opted out.

So the lack of an elaborate NCAA -sponsored playoffs in FBS should be utterly unsurprising.

I don't care too much about any bowls not associated with the Sun Belt; so here is what I'd fix for this conference:

SBC Champ gets either a P5 or the MAC or CUSA Champ.

Bowl Line up & Opponents

New Orleans Bowl: SBC Champ vs CUSA Champ or P5 at-large (or if SBC Champ is in DG Bowl) SBC #4 vs AAC at-large
Dollar General Bowl: SBC Champ vs MAC Champ (or if SBC Champ is in NOLA) SBC #4 vs. MAC #whatever
Cure Bowl: SBC #2 vs. AAC #Whatever
Camellia Bowl: SBC #3 vs. MWC
Myrtle Beach Bowl: SBC #5 vs. MAC/CUSA

Agreed ... more bowls the better.

But what would I change about bowl season? Since my team is in the ACC, I'd want ACC bowl tie ins to New Orleans and Las Vegas. I don't care if we play a high school team there. I just would love to hit those towns for a bowl game.

The Sugar Bowl trip versus Florida was soooooo much fun. Despite the fact I caught the flu the day OF the game, and was shivering with a 100+ degree fever while the Cards were kicking the crap out of the Gators.

Instead of having all bowls, just let teams host extra games. Let the NCAA sponsor those as well.

RE: What would you change to bowl season?
All non-NY6 bowls are at-large vs at-large. No conference tie-ins.

No team shall appear in the same non-NY6 more than two years in a row.

The process for team selection shall be from the highest payout to the lowest. Highest bowl payout picks first, lowest picks last. In cases where multiple bowls have the same payout then the oldest bowl selects ahead of those that are newer.

If there aren't enough bowl eligible teams then the bowls are allowed to pick any FBS team not on punitive probation to play regardless of record.

All bowls are required to have a minimum payout of $350k per team.

Any proposed new bowl must have a guaranteed payout of at least $500k per team and an over-the-air or cable TV deal in place before certification.

Any bowl taking place outside the United States shall be required to have a guaranteed payout of at least $650k.

Yes, but a whole weekend of football would be better.

Having the bowls play any earlier than mid-December doesn't provide enough time to schedule 14-16 bowl practices.
