BTW, the Blue Chips plot line:
That's some sh!t I'd expect Coach K to pull. Use and abuse the system for your benefit for YEARS then turn around and get all high and mighty about how it's become a trainwreck. I'm sure he justifies everything he does as having a silver lining such as "I'm doing it to help these kids...."
Wouldn't put it past Cal either. In this scenario it would simply have to benefit him at that moment.

Nearly to a man they bash Memphis, mock Penny and are convincing himself he cannot do it regardless of the quality of recruits.
Until the last post which properly points out a few things, even if it stops short if recognizing that while Memphis is no North Carolina, we have some solid history even before Narcissist
New How’s it any different than when Cal was getting top recruits at Memphis? Same school, city, humidity, and crime as when he was there.
Penny had more success in the nba than Cal did.
I bleed UK blue all the way. But considering the state of college basketball I don’t see why it’s mind blowing to some that an ex nba superstar and Mike Miller are bringing in top recruits at a school where Cal did it too. And the Cal Memphis hired wasn’t the hall of fame coach that’s at KY now.

He will be tarred and feathered. Logic is neither welcomed nor wanted (or even recognized and understood for that matter) by extremists and loons.

Weirdest part is they hired our coach who took MEMPHIS to the finals.

His team isn't winning as often as it once did and his successful program needs to attract new star players and fast. But the brightest stars of the future—the so-called "blue-chip" prospects—are secretly being paid by other schools.
This practice is forbidden in the college game, but Penny is desperate after a losing season. A school booster, greedy "friend of the program", will stop at nothing to land these star high school players for Memphis's next season and gets the okay from the coach to do so. This includes giving a new car to the gigantic James Wiseman, a house and job to the mother of RJ Hampton and a tractor to the father of farmboy Trendon Watford, as well as a bag filled with cash.
With sportswriter Gary suspecting a scandal, Penny continues to be contaminated by selfish demands from the players and a dirty association with the booster. His estranged wife, a former guidance counselor, agrees to tutor Wiseman, who has below average grades, but she feels betrayed when Penny lies to her about the new athletes receiving illegal inducements to attend the school.
Penny comes to realize that one of his senior players, Jeremiah, a personal favorite, had "shaved points" in a game his freshman season, conspiring to beat a gambling point spread. Penny is disgusted at what he and his program have become.
University of Memphis has a big nationally televised game coming up versus Duke, the #1 team in the country, coached by Mike Krzyzewski. After winning the game, Penny cannot bear the guilt of having cheated. At a press conference, he confesses to the entire scandal and resigns as head coach. Leaving the press conference and the arena, Penny walks past a small playground with kids playing basketball—he approaches, then helps coaching them.
An epilogue later reveals that the university would be suspended from tournament play for three years. Penny did continue to coach, but at the high school level; RJ Hampton graduated and played pro ball in Europe; Trendon Watford got injured and returned home to run the family farm, and James dropped out of college, but both now play in the NBA.
I just need to meet Happy....I mean....the booster.
I love the movie and this is pretty funny. I'm sure there are many people ready to shoot us down as soon as we take off. There will be people shouting this from the rooftops. Penny has upset the apple cart.
To be honest, I didn’t see the movie but remember it being out. When I read this I was thinking it sounded a little cheesy. And as I got through with it I just figured it was one of the cretins on the UK boards summarizing their favorite wet dream.

I only saw bits and pieces of it...but I realized what it was right away.
