Joey just posted this article. I’ll be honest, knowing this now I understand the lack of recent reporting on recruits. This new reporter seems like a top notch hire, and beyond that a better person. I don’t care who you are, if you have multiple friends willing to do what her friends did for for her to get her setup here... you’ve got something good going on.

Joey, not sure if you’re reading these boards yet (but you should, lol). You’re in the Seahawk FAMILY now. Just as we will always consider your predecessor a Seahawk family member we will consider you the same. I hope you grow to enjoy the university just as much as those of us alumni and other UNCW fans.

For sure...

I'm not saying she should frequent or contribute to the message board, but it does suck that we had Alex who was very informative with us and at this point we're just kind of in the dark on Joey's interaction with UNCW sports.

Perhaps it's just a "getting used to and comfortable" with the job type thing, but yeah... we were spoiled. You always tend to appreciate what you had a little more when it's gone.

Let's give the new beat writer a chance. Hawks seem to do well once that is announced and it's a lot easier job when you have good talent. And, they now are finally getting the kind of players/mix that can do things in the near future. And,I say finally like it's a given that UNCW should recruit at the top of the CAA conference. We will see if that translates but I like their chances over the past couple of years barring injuries.

I wish her well, and we don't know how many hats she is being asked to wear in this new media era. So she definitely should be given the benefit of the doubt. But it is also fair - after 4 months on the job - to begin making some comparisons to her predecessors.

Hopefully you are correct - the Hawks will be much improved and she will be inspired to write about them accordingly.

Just curious but how many of us actually subscribe to the StarNews? I don't. I live in Charlotte and have never felt compelled to.

She's not as active on social media which is how I followed Mull and Alex. That will be an adjustment for me. However, if you look at her list of off season stories I'm not sure how much more I would have expected from her. Really don't care to read much more than she has out there to be honest. Kind of in a show me state with the staff. I'm not too interested in preseason fluff.

I think if the Star News wants to retain any sort of membership or readership in general from UNCW fans they MUST carry on the social media torch lit by Brian Mull and furthered by Alex. Abandoning that in today's world is suicidal to any publication, IMO.

Further, I'm not solely interested in reading about men's basketball. There's plenty of sports at UNCW to cover. Our volleyball team is currently having a great season, and perhaps their best of all time.

What I really enjoyed about the last person in the position (Alex) was his attendance at games, providing quick pre and post game/match videos and sometimes interviews. It felt like we were a part of what he was reporting on, and it developed and cultivated a genuine excitement about whatever event was taking place.

I don't think any of us are meaning to say she's not good at her job. Just casual observations on some of what really seemed to work well from a alumni and fan perspective.
