Maybe if you actually go there you might find that it's not a cesspool and understand why ppl would want to go there.

Don't expect people to have an open mind about places and people (they view) different from them.

California Sees Slowest Population Growth Since It Started Counting

https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-gov...10029.html

Dowell Myers, professor of policy, planning and demography at USC, said young families are delaying having kids or outright moving because of the state’s expensive housing.

“There’s a migration outflow, and young people are the most mobile,” Myers said.

California has long been a net-exporter of residents to other states. Its population usually climbs because of births and foreign immigration.

I went to the UCLA football game last year. I was glad I went, but I would never go back unless I had a good reason. The place was a dump.

Your point here? How does this invalidate the point that the region continues to grow in both population and economic might?!? Ok, some millionaires leave. And...?

do better. 07-coffee3

Okay. You are correct.

The population explosion has really added to the California Lifestyle and the SoCal quality of life. The typical immigrant brings to Los Angeles County an excellent skill set and vast array of talents. As does his wife and children.

The Los Angeles/Orange County middle class is rapidly expanding, as evidenced by the 64% of los angeles dwellings occupied by renters and 62% of Long Beach dwellings occupied by renters. But there is plenty of "help" available to the middle class, as those in Orange County with a household income of $84,450 (family of 4) are now recognized as "low income" and are eligible for "aid."

All of this is excellent news to the typical Orange County Middle Class family because today, Zillow declares the housing market "cold" and a "buyers market" because of the Median Orange County Home Price of $721,500.

This represents a tremendous value for the three couples (cousins/uncles/aunts) who join forces to buy that house, dividing the mortgage three ways, and sharing the 1,400 square foot home between three nuclear families.

The neighbors who live on that street are of course overjoyed, because with nearly no transit system in The OC, that single family house will be home to AT LEAST six (6) vehicles parked in front of that house and of course up and down the street. If the street is fortunate enough to have several of these densely occupied homes, well, even better for the neighbors.

In closing, let me concede that SoCal circa 2019 is superior in every way to SoCal circa 1989. And it just keeps getting better.

I presume you reference Dowell Myers because he taught at the UC Planning School in DAAP for a year back in the 1980-1982 timeframe. COGS
Vacationed out in California last year. Visit the USS Iowa at Long Beach, my dad was a medical officer on her during the Korean Conflict...proud UC grad.
Stayed in Glendale and visited the sites to include the Rose Bowl while in the LA area all very nice but crowded. San Francisco again crowded, but the homeless crowd is off the track too unruly...eating on fisherman's wharf and individual ask to take the plate away and it was a homeless person..walked with the unfinished portion. 03-banghead

Woooooow. That's equal parts ballsy, and innovative.

SF homeless are on a whole other level.

I admit, if I had the money, I would move to a SoCal city like San Francisco or San Diego in a heartbeat. The weather and quality of life are incredible. But yeah, SF does have a huge homeless problem... ever heard of the Poop Patrol? 03-lmfao

What's stopping you now? Honest question. I could find a job and move out there within the month, if I wanted. Maybe being an engineer has spoiled my outlook on how hard it is to move. I hear/read that people would love to move to XYZ, all the time. I just never understand why they don't.

Like I said... I would if I had the money. H1-B visa abuse can make it difficult to move up in IT.

Southern CA was the best place in the world to live... 40 years ago. 30 years ago it was good. 20 years ago it was ok. Now it's halfway to Mexico as far as quality of life.

They still have wealthy institutions from being the best economy in the world from 1930-1999. But at this point they're a mere 40 years behind Cleveland in their decline.

I love it when people from Cincinnati and Ohio criticize California. Born and raised in Cincinnati however California is superior in most metrics than Ohio, plus Ohio has been declining for years and it's part of the Rust Belt for crying out loud! Every place has its advantages and disadvantages, and overall I prefer living in Albuquerque however there are certain things I do miss about Cincinnati.

ABQ, beautiful place. Good food. Love me some green chilis. Overall though pretty boring. Santa Fe is pretty special too.

The Green Chili is awesome and you are right about ABQ and Santa Fe. Denver has much better night life and I have thought about moving there however it is expensive and traffic has become a nightmare. You get all 4 seasons here, lots of sunshine, a lot of culture with Native American, Spanish/Mexican, Old West and Cowboy. I Ski once a year with co-workers and I enjoy hiking and camping in the Mountains especially in the Summer because the weather is nice and cool up there.

The wife is a DAAP grad and a huge Georgia O’Keeffe fan. Needless to say New Mexico holds a special place in her heart.

Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Santa Cruz are all fantastic. LA overwhelms me, but it's fun if you know where to go - so much great ethnic food. San Francisco is/ was my kind of town - it's compact, and has a ton to do. Unfortunately, it's become overrun with tech bros the last decade......

Luckily I have some family that lives in LA and they know where to go for food and nightlife. My Cousin and his wife who is Asian took me to an Asian nightclub and I have never seen so many beautiful Asian women, it was amazing.

My Aunt gave me a Georgia O'Keefe painting as a housewarming gift. My Mom is a fan of her as well and my parents visit me quite often from Cincy since they are retired. I have been to her museum a few times in Santa Fe.
