Great article. Thanks for the post.

I wonder if Bohn read it? A much better way to search for a coach instead of a short conversation in the hallway with Savino, and a Sunday phone call with Brannen. And we wonder why we struggle to take the next step in the NCAA tournament, bowl game invites, and conference affiliations.

You serious, Clark?

Many reports have stated that multiple candidates were considered / interviewed during the week-long search and that Brannen's name kept coming out on top in comparison to others.

It's laughable that you positively compare UCLA's hiring process to UC's. UCLA hasn't found success over its last several hires (in several sports) and has become a Tier II destination.

The clearest difference is that UC got the guy on the top of their list, and UCLA quite literally got the guy that they admitted to was on the very bottom of theirs.

Yup... The only thing that got people off laughing about the UCLA hiring...disaster..."hiring process" was the dumpster fire that erupted at Saint John's. But the UCLA debacle went on-and-on-and-on for what...three weeks?...even as Alford found another job at Nevada. It was a string of public rejections. I wondered if Mick was really going to take the job at the end because it certainly had to hurt him as well as UCLA. The whole world knows that UCLA wanted Jaime Dixon...not Mick Cronin.

There's no way in hell I want a story like that playing out at UC.
Further illustrates how willing Mick was to get out of here, which makes me feel better about him leaving. Makes his statement about UCLA's desire and resources to win kind of laughable given what they were willing to offer to some candidates and not others. Mick basically left and is making similar money (and likely less than what we were renegotiating), so he's accepting the position based on the legacy of the program. Good luck with that, Mick. If he thought UC fans were hard on him, he isn't going to be happy with how UCLA treats a Tier II coach.

Yea man. Bohn's coaching hires have been a disaster. Fickell, goggins, Clark- heard. Might as well fold the athletic department.

04-cheers Meanwhile UCLA's search has been panned for being inept.

UCLA could have had Jamie Dixon had it not been for the quirky language in his contract regarding his buyout. UCLA could not directly pay the buyout to TCU so they had to give him the cash, thus resulting in tax consequences.

This article confirms what I've said before, best for both UC and for Mick to start something new. Sometimes after working together after so many years employees and employers need to change things up as they grow weary of one another.

What a crazy article. Unbelievable how the insane tax laws in Cali caused the Dixon deal to fall through. $4 mill in taxes on a $9 mil buyout? That's completely insane. Also, if this article is accurate Rick Barnes comes across as a total tool, especially after his press conference about deciding to stay at UT. Obviously one of the parties isn't telling the truth with how that deal fell through, whether it's Barnes or UCLA.

Hope and wishful thinking springs eternal in you....nice but really just average stuff.

Fickell improved but still didn't sniff the AAC Championship with mostly CTT players.

Anyone...I mean anyone could improve women's hoops. And who re-upped the former coach's contract.

And baseball is .500. C'mon man - just above average your litmus test?

The real test for Bohn will he be able to keep them if your rose-colored projections come true.

Bolded, didn't we read that Mick paid the buyout to UC? If so, that must have been much more costly than we first thought since he also would have taken a major tax hit on the income to net out sufficient funds to pay UC.

My takeaway is the UC job remains very attractive financially. Brannen was hired for less certainly but with a little success he'll be back to $2.2 million or so that Mick was earning. Those dollars go a lot further in Cincinnati than in other major markets where housing and taxes take an enormous bite.

This is what stands out for me:

“This isn’t a hard decision,” Cronin said of coming to UCLA at his introductory news conference after signing a six-year, $24.5-million contract.

So it wasn't hard to leave your supposed "dream job"?

um...ok.

UCLA's search was a mess. But it's hard to blame them for going after some of those top coaches. Seems like they almost got Calipari. Had they immediately gone after Dixon or Cronin or even Rick Barnes, fans and media would have killed them for not aiming higher.

I don't think you're right that UCLA has become a Tier II program. But if that's what you believe, what would that make UC? They got our coach and we got Northern Kentucky's. You think John Brannen was on UCLA's list at all?

The fact they settled for our former coach and couldn't land any of their top targets says something although I still think UCLA is one of the better programs historically but lets not pretend their coaching search was one to be emulated.

LMFAO. Sure

I was just going by what the linked article said.

I don't think it matters anyway. The point is that UCLA would have been stupid not to go after some of the top coaches, even if it risked making their eventual hire look like their 50th choice.

Absolutely and it tells you everything I thought about Mick. He wanted out AND he has such a low opinion of himself that he didn’t care how they hired him.

Southern CA was the best place in the world to live... 40 years ago. 30 years ago it was good. 20 years ago it was ok. Now it's halfway to Mexico as far as quality of life.

They still have wealthy institutions from being the best economy in the world from 1930-1999. But at this point they're a mere 40 years behind Cleveland in their decline.

Wow. Really wanted to lay a good ole blanket statement on California. Glad you found an opening.

Sorry, I lived there for the past 3 years. I honestly can't see why anyone would ever voluntarily choose to live there if they have outside options.

Where did you live in LA?

Barstow.

Not at all L.A., but that fully explains your perspective. That's some harsh landscape out thataway.

Be sure to read the comments. The fans are saying Mick needs to hire an "offense-minded assistant," before he's coached his first game. Sound familiar?

It doesn't matter much to me whether Mick was their 5th choice or 10th choice or whatever. At the end of the day he ended up the coach at UCLA. Things happen for a reason and Mick and the UCLA administration are happy and we're happy for a changing of the guard. 07-coffee3

Nice find. Thanks.

After reading article, I would place an O/U betting line of 3.5 yrs on Mick's tenure at Pauley.

Article raised a few thoughts. Scary how close we came to keeping Mick. Talk about a botched search. Cal negotiating during the season and/or March. Mick was their 75th choice and wanted the heck out of Cincy. Glad UC did not conduct a circus of a hiring process as UCLA did.
