That Marshall game was when they had to change the student section rules. I remember that our fraternity was in charge of cleaning up the pregame area in Sheakley Lawn. It was the football version of "Shine the Shoe." and they also provided us tickets. We arrived a little after kickoff and there was nowhere to stand in the student section. We were all forced to stand on the stairs and in aisles. It was the first time I felt like UC football was catching on.
It was very different from my freshman year in 2006. The first couple games in 2006 I was able to sit down and relax in the student section. The upper classmen would buy us beer and we all had room to recline and set our beers down.
The student section has never been the same since that Marshall game.

Back then, the tradition was that the winning band took the field after the game.
UC was trailing the entire game. But we had a great QB in Greg Cook, and a really good kicker in Jim O'Brian. (OB was also one of our best WRs) Late in the game, UC had the ball and was driving. The Miami Band lined up behind the north end zone. The Bearcat Band was behind the south (horseshoe) end zone. UC lined up for a 47 yard FG attempt with about 3 seconds left. Miami decided to ice the kicker and called a time out. OB made good use of that time out to change from his WR shoes into his kicking shoes - and then nailed the FG.
My favorite memory - standing with the band about 5 yards behind the goal posts and watching the ball sail through - with perhaps 2 feet to spare. The Bearcat Band took the field for the victory concert. The Miami Band marched back to their buses.
(Best single memory - perhaps rivaled, not surpassed - by Pike to Binns about 10 years ago.)

I got there the day before the game and UC fans had taken over New Orleans. It was awesome walking into the French Quarter seeing so many people wearing the Red and Black. At the game, witnessing an estimated 25K fill up the SuperDome and chant Down the Drive prior to the game was just an experience I'll never forget. I got a huge lump in my throat and I began to tear up. I was a student during the Tim Murphy era, and never did I think UC would be in a game like this with so much support.
This x3. One of the greatest trips of my life. Got to meet Marty B and Bourbon Street and even he was blown away by the turnout.

I still contend that was the largest attendance for a game at Nippert. That was when you could still just walk up, and get in with your student ID...had to have been at least 12,000 students, every aisle was full top to bottom and rocking like crazy, and the rest of the stadium was basically full as well. That was the game right after we beat the piss out of Oregon State and people could start feeling something special...after the Marshall game they started passing out tickets to students because the FD said it was unsafe to have the amount of people we did. I remember I was with a few other guys on the soccer team who had never been to an American Football game before...they were hooked from the start.
This was absolutely the largest attendance game at Nippert at least until the remodel. I firmly believe there were 40,000 at the game. The student section was overflowing. Students were in the aisles and crammed tight. The area behind the student section was jammed.
I remember that being an amazing day as a Bearcat fan. I had graduated in June, but had friends doing their 5th year victory lap and some younger friends still there. It was Octoberfest so we all went down had some beers. There were a good amount of Marshall fans around. We invited some we met at Octoberfest to join us at our front yard tailgate next to Mr. Tuxedo. Partied all day before the night game. The game was awesome, but it felt huge because of the crowd. The next week UC announced students could no longer just use their ID to get into the game.
The Rutgers win on a damp cold Saturday evening when they were undefeated with Dantonio at the helm was a great time albeit a light crowd due to rain and the Osu/Mich. game earlier in the afternoon. Fans crashed the field after it. Really kind of the start of the modern era of success.
Also, the 2009 win over West Virginia at Nippert. That was a really good series, but the WV fans would get so drunk at those games they were a sloppy mess. I recall we had to jump a couple of their trucks in order for them to get out of there as they had started partying so early over by short vine that they ran their batteries dead. It really screwed with them big time that we came so far so fast so as to be competitive with them.

For that time, the crowd was pretty damn good too. 27,804 was the announced attendance which seems about right.
I tried everything to get people I knew to go to this one including writing a letter that the Newrecord ran.

Yep, i still have my dvd they sent of that game to all the ucats folks. I watched it last year. I think it was DeAngelo Williams who had a great pick 6 in the second half. That ruined Schiano's perfect season. Crowd was crazy. I remember telling some guys i know that didn't show up that they missed the best game ever at Nippert. I was a blast.
I also thought recently TT win over Miami in that Thursday night espn game was a great moment. That was strong performance on a national game. Kind of gets lost in the TT era, but i would say his biggest win.

Indeed. Beating a name opponent as well as the overall environment of that night really took me back to the Big East days. I may have shed a tear at the end of that game. It didn't matter that Miami sucked that year, it was just glorious to beat a nationally recognizable team in Nippert again... most of our current conference mates are no-names, has-beens, and whipping boys.

Wait, someone was playing bid euchre on campus? I could only ever find games of turn-up (straight) euchre, which was SO unchallenging once you played bid euchre.
Were the bid euchre players from Auglaize and/or Shelby counties?
My memory sucks at times but someone taught us the bid version before our frosh year. Funny thing was, most people in the dorm had no clue what euchre was. We taught a few to play that year for sure! More people knew what spades or hearts was but not euchre - far superior card game IMO. I think euchre is more of a northern Ohio and Michigan thing.
