RE: Who saw Blue Chips in the theater?
It still bugs me somewhat that Penny and Shaq keep the story alive that Shaq didn't even know who Penny was until the Blue Chips movie. The 30 for 30 on the Magic teams depicted him as pretty much an unknown which was complete crap. I remember reading an article about Shaq and Penny playing on some all star squad in high school vs other country's and how well they played together.
I imagine that playing together that summer certainly helped Pennys cause and may have been the catalyst for his going to Orlando, but the him not knowing who he was because he played in relative obscurity at little ole Memphis is ridiculous

Meh, that was a different time, right before the age of the internet and about a decade before the rise of social media. It's not ridiculous to think that people outside of Memphis were not as aware of Penny as they would be today if he was coming up.

Maybe Shaq knew of Penny through the all star team, but it's believable he didn't know much about him until they bonded on the movie set.

RE: Who saw Blue Chips in the theater?
I saw in the theater and found it terrible. And given I had horrendous tastes in movies back then — and clearly knew that — I figured I would like it.

For the past 10 years or so, I have developed an appreciation for foreign, non-mainstream and documentary films. But while my tastes have improved, I've become an arrogant elitist.

Shaq lied all the time then and probably does now.

SI did a anniversary thing where are they now that I found on Twitter that had a lot of things about the movie I didn’t know:

I want to see the TV series they are trying to sell to Hollywood. A football coach trying to win clean in today's NCAA. Could be great!
