Guys, we are ******* fine. Good god. For the past 13 seasons we have all been sheltered from some of the harsh realities of big time college basketball.
But this program isn't going anywhere. I'm so over the sky is falling, let's throw in the towel, zip it up and go home attitudes some of ya'll maintain.

Posters: MICK CAN'T RECRUIT MICK CAN'T RECRUIT.
UC: *Loses some Mick recruits*
Posters: HOW WILL WE EVER BE ABLE TO GO ON?!?!?!

Jarron is the only guy anyone should be concerned about. IMO i put him about 85% chance of coming back...but if he leaves, THEN we can all ***** and moan for a year. But until then, ******* BREATHE guys. UC is gonna be fine.

Sports fans in general have a need to vent and complain. Most recently, you can go back to the Luke Fickell hire. I'd say 1/2 to 2/3 of the posters were questioning the hire and Mike Bohn's competence after Year 1. How's that looking now? As you point out, our basketball program speaks for itself. Not to take anything away from prior coaches but the program can stand on its own merits. It's bigger than any one player or coach - as most top programs are. We should feel fortunate that we have such a program and understand that moving forward we'll have a few bumps but the end result will be worth every one.

I agree that program is bigger than one player, but as far as the coach I completely disagree. It is the most important part of collage sports. Players are coming to UC because of the coach. Just look at the difference in the recruits that Huggins and Mick brought in (Before anyone gets mad I'm not bashing Mick.) It's not like UC goes to the final four every other year and 4 and 5 star recruits are beating the door down to come here. If a school hires 2-3 bad coaches in a row it can sets the program 10 -20 years.
I think UC is a great school with tons to offer, but we should not under how important the right coach is. Coach Brannen seems to be a good one and I'm looking forward to his uptempo style. GOBEARCATS

Let me clarify, having a good coach and good players is certainly a part of the overall success of a program. I'm simply saying that our program has a brand and a history [and now top facilities] that is going to attract both. Cincinnati has a good track record of success and the fact the program endures and remains competitive and relevant speaks for itself.

I realize these are different posters but I'm not sure how we can reconcile these posts. If we're doing a 180 in terms of philosophy isn't that basically a 180 on our brand?

Good point. I'll add a distinction and see if others believe it's a difference.

Our reputation; our "calling card" if you will this past decade or two has been hard nosed, scrappy defense that wins lots of games. Our brand is that of a historic top twenty program that has succeeded with different styles of play from Coaches Smith, Jucker, Catlett, Huggins and Cronin.

Seems like we should have a good shot at him. He's unranked on 247 and his best offer in from Minnesota. Probably a redshirt candidate if we did get him. The good is he looks like a very good athlete, with size and length. The bad is he needs to put on 20lbs of muscle and improve his shooting.

Probably accurate. I think the really good news is with our new coach and how we will actually have a real offense (see DerMarr’s comments), we wont need a bunch of Lazelle Durdens to score. The system will enhance and help players score vs the old regime, which actually had the reverse effect on players’ offense. Watch Cumberland ave 20ppg+ in this offense.

That Williams guy looks pretty good from his videos against top competition. Late bloomer who could be a top 200 player soon.

Would be nice if our roster next year included two Cumberlands and two Williams03-idea

I just would like to note the change in tune. If Mick recruited this guy Bearcats#1 (and a lot of others) would be bitching that he's another low-rated project (probably a redshirt) who is an athlete first and not a shooter.

Now you guys like the exact same type of player and say he looks good, is a late bloomer and should succeed in Brannen's offense.

Don't get me wrong, I'd be happy with Williams. I like to watch projects develop and I'd rather have an athlete with the potential to become a star then a non-athlete who can play a solid role by shooting. His handle looks okay, his passing looks very good, his shooting looks questionable and he has the size and athleticism to become an excellent defender (once he adds 20lbs or so), give him 2-3 years and he may become a star.

Just think it's funny how suddenly the same type of guy goes from a terrible recruit to a good one and how anyone who leaves the UC program instantly was a mediocre player anyway (according to some of the fan base).

I do not want any more athletes. Period. If the best thing about a guy is he's " athletic " that means he has minimal other measurable skills. We have seen where our " athletes " have gotten us. We don't win with them when it counts. Hard pass.

I am giving Brannen a pass at the moment, as he's in a bit of a tough situation in regards to recruiting since he came in late. Williams has some decent offers, so it's not like he's completely out of left field. If our future recruiting classes mainly consist of projects, then I will be just as critical as I would be towards Mick.

Cronin had 13 years to improve recruiting but never was able to consistently bring in guys that were ready year one or filled a need. Last year the Cats needed someone better than Fredricks, Johnson, and two redshirts to continue the momentum. When Villanova and Virginia suffered tournament heartbreak they came right back with elite players and won it all.

I still think UC should be recruiting at a higher level. Maybe the athletic department isn’t marketing the program the right way. Maybe UC should try to be more aggressive in the uniform, shoe, and swag game. A new approach to social media couldn’t hurt. Embracing the past would help including the Huggins years in the glory days of 1950’s and 1960’s.

Sloan to Kansas State? Is it time to get worried yet?

I don’t care who the coach at UC is, I am just tired of watching a program consistently get out recruited by schools that UC would run circles around 20 years ago.

Why is the reputation of the basketball program to not good enough to recruit at the level we did 20 years ago. It can’t completely be the conference.

This isn’t a criticism of Brannen but more a bewildered fan who continues to see other schools pass UC.
