This is why the obsession with the Dance is a fool’s errand
Forget the dance then. Just be obsessed with winning a conference tournament.

But for the winning prize being an automatic ticket to the Dance, no one would care about winning the CAA conference tournament.

Because the ultimate goal of playing top level sports since grade school is to win championships. Yes, the NCAA tournament comes with that. Sure, we want to do it the right way, but everything we do as a program should be about competing for a championship. Are we really just suiting up to get our "thanks for playing" participation trophy?

RE: This is why the obsession with the Dance is a fool’s errand
As Matt Painter has said in the last few weeks after the loss to UVa, Purdue’s goal is to make the Final Four and win a NC “without selling our soul”.
The NCAA has sold its soul re: the Dance. Maybe our AD in her new role will help reform the NCAA, rather than be complicit in the perpetuation of the corruption. That would be worthy of a press release.
W&M sold its soul by allegedly “raising the bar”, and using same as justification for the firing of Tony Shaver. Putting the program in a $1.7 million buyout hole is not “raising the bar”. The AD should forfeit her salary, and plug that hole with her salary, not our donations.
“Everything we do as a program should be about competing for a championship”. Lay that bar/accusation at the feet of this and prior Administrations, athletic and academic, and not the coach. Tony was all about competing for a championship, with one hand tied behind his back by the school.
Likewise, re: the “participation trophy”. Lay that at the school’s feet, not Tony’s.
And don’t lay it at mine either! That’s BS when it comes to me, and my viewpoint, and you know it! I want our school in the ACC and/or FBS in football, and ya’ll are sick of me pounding that drum. The argument was always financial as to why it couldn’t be done, but obviously money is not a problem at the present time with the present administration.
And don’t tell me that we now have an AD that gets it. The firing of Tony tells me that she doesn’t get it; it remains to be seen how this all plays out, but she gets no more rope ... and no more dollars from me.
And I’m not alone.

Comments like Painter’s “not selling our soul” reek of sanctimony. Purdue is just as dirty as most of the other major players. Membership in that conference practically guarantees that. Ask any D-1 player who has been to the tournament; what they think? It’s a memory maker!!!
All this hubbub evokes a schoolyard response. If you don’t like the game; pull up your pants and leave.

So our goal should be what then?
Say what you want, but making the dance would be a huge media boon for the College. I know I would do everything in my power to travel to our first ever tournament game, and I'm certain there's a large contingent who would do the same.

I don't believe that getting to the tournament does much other than when a few reporters make fun of us for finally making it on National television. I'm sure John Feinstein will write something. Now, if we can do something crazy like make it to the sweet 16 that changes everything. Even winning against a major program in round 1 would do a lot in terms of National publicity.
What I want is to have a basketball program that can attract the best scholar athletes in the nation and becomes a true powerhouse where we win 20 games a year, every year. Will we get there? I don't know. Seems like we had a good path forward until Huge set us back a few years. Maybe Fischer can find a way to do better than Tony did in recruiting that type of player. That would be somewhat amazing given his background and those of the new coaches. Maybe Boatner will be the next whiz kid. That would be ironic, I suppose.

What does any of this have to do with the Redskins drafting a player from JMU?

About as much as the Chargers taking their first pick from UD.

Thirty two hopes for consistent 20 win seasons. I do too. Furthermore, with the new regime; it wouldn’t surprise me in the least. When we get to the tourney, people will come out of the woodwork. Media will be everywhere. Charter jets, friends on board, parties etc. It’s exciting!! Retaining Audige is an important early step.

That can't be, Frank... I've got it on good authority that the tourney is a fool's errand.
