Rice vs. La Tech (Friday Game 1)
Scoreless heading to the B3. Canterino has given up 2 hits, but has 3 Ks. On offense, we've gong 6 up, 6 down, with 3 strikeouts. We've got to put more balls in play.

Collins struck out looking-- our 3rd K looking in 2.1 IP. Story of the season-- I've never in my life seen so many looking strikeouts, and there has been absolutely no improvement as the season progresses.
Frazier struck out looking. This is pathetic.
Beaulaurier grounded out.

We;re going down like flies. Yes, he's LaTech's one quality starter (they do have an elite bullpen, however), but this guy is not that good.

Interesting approach by LaTech-- they've been first pitch swinging, and all 3 of their hits (including leadoff batter in T4) have come on first pitch swings. Matt needs to start pitching backwards, and start these guys off with off-speed pitches.

Comeaux homers to break the no-hitter and shutout. 1-0 Rice.

We needed that.
LaTech’s starter was suffocating us.

RE: Rice vs. La Tech (Friday Game 1)
Matt give up two hits (leadoff single, double), but no runs as leadoff man was caught stealing. BTW, LaTech is second in the conference (after Marshall) in stolen bases with 51. We have 13. Matt up to 4 strikeoutsKKKK and 55 pitches through 4 IP.

Comeaux first pitch bomb! 02-13-banana HR#3 for Braden, all solo shots.
Gneitting struck out looking. Our 5th looking K and 6th K in 3.1 IP. Note-- this LaTech pitcher is averaging just over 1 K per IP.
Cruz single. One out.
Dunlap walked. Runners on 1B and 2B, one out.
Edwards struck out swinging. Ugh.
Cox grounded out.
Way too many strikeouts. We're looking at fastballs down broadway on 2-0 counts. Makes no sense. We should be aggressive in those situations.

Good guys take a 1-0 lead heading to the top of the fifth inning.

Matt again gives up a leadoff single, but strands the runner at 1B after picking up another two strikeoutsKKKKKK.

Collins popped up to 1B.
Frazier first pitch fly out.
Beaulaurier grounded out to pitcher.
Lightning quick 5-pitch inning. Ugh.

Good guys lead 1-0 heading to the top of the sixth.

RE: Rice vs. La Tech (Friday Game 1)
Third consecutive inning LaTech gets the leadoff man on; this time via a 4-pitch walk. Historically, that has been a sign of Matt tiring, but he's only 76 pitches. Hope that's not the case.

After a force out at 2B, Matt gives up a 1-2 single to put runners at the corners with one out, and facing the guy who had been 2-2 with a double against him. He struck him out on a 3-2 pitch, then got a fly out to end the threat. Clutch pitching. However, pitch count up to 96, meaning likely one more inning max.

RE: Rice vs. La Tech (Friday Game 1)
Comeaux hit by the pitch.
Gneitting struck out swinging.
Cruz RBI triple! 02-13-banana Trei's 5th triple of the season.
Dunlap intentionally walked. Runners on the corners.
Edwards RBI on squeeze bunt 02-13-banana, with Cruz safe at the plate and Edwards on 1B.
Cox struck out.
Collins grounded out.

Good guys take a 3-0 lead into the top of the seventh inning.

Wow, Matt strikes outKKKKKKKKKK the side in order in the T7. Pitch count now at 109. Please go with Jeffries in the 8th, and not increase the risk factor.

B TW, LaTech's starter already has 9 Ks, but his pitch count is only at 83 to start the B7.

Frazier popped out to 2B.
Beaulaurier stuck out looking. That's 7 looking Ks on the night. Unacceptable.
Comeaux flied out.

Good guys lead 3-0 heading to the top of the eighth inning. Jeffries is in for Canterino. No freebies and no errors!

Kendall gives up a 2-out single (after 2 strikeoutsKK), but strands the runner.

We only have 3 hits and 10 Ks through 7 innings, but the HR, triple and perfectly executed squeeze turned those 3 hits into 3 runs.

LaTech's starter still in there-- smart move as it saves their strong bullpen for the final two games...and Miller is still under 100 pitches...
Gneitting 9-pitch leadoff walk. Great AB by Bradley, who had struggled mightily against Miller. He fought all the way back from an 0-2 count.
Cruz struck out looking (that's 8 looking K's on the night!!!!) and Gneitting thrown out trying to steal. So much for this inning.
Dunlap struck out swinging.
12 strikeouts for Miller; 8 looking. 03-banghead

Good guys take a 3-0 lead heading to the top of the ninth inning.

Ks 1 out.

Ks 2 outs, then single. Close it out Kendal!

6-3 ends it. Owls win!

RE: Rice vs. La Tech (Friday Game 1)
Ugh. Kendall gives up a leadoff HR. Huddleston is 3-4 tonight with a double and HR.

Kendall strikes out the next batter. One down.
Kendall strikes out the next batter. Two down.
Single. Runner on 1B, two outs.
Ball game!

Game Ball #1: Matt Canterino (W, 6-4, 7.0 IP, 6 hits, 1 BB, 10 Ks)-- back to back dominant outings for the ace. With 313 career strikeouts, he passes Austin Kubitza into the #10th position all-time at Rice.

Game Ball #2: Braden Comeaux (1-3, HBP, HR#3, 2 runs, RBI)-- and he's extended Rice's season-best on-base streak to 18 games.

Game Ball #3: Trei Cruz (2-4, triple, 1 run, RBI)-- his triple off the CF fence turned out to be the game-winner.

Offense was really weak tonight, but we managed to make the most of our 3 hits and 8 baserunners. No errors, and a perfectly executed squeeze.

We now face two sub-par starting pitchers for LaTech-- both with ERA over 5.50, but their elite bullpen is well rested and has been lights out of late. Need to win at least one more this weekend to give us momentum for the home stretch. Go Owls!

Big win. I think La Tech was ranked 16th?

I do not see LaTech -- or any other CUSA team, for that matter -- in the Top 25s of the current D1Baseball, BaseballAmerica or Coaches/USAToday polls.

In the Coaches poll, "also receiving votes" were FAU (14 votes/32nd place), USM (12/34th) and LaTech (2/T44th).

Might you have confused LaTech with LSU, which was ranked 13th (D1B), 14th (BA) & 16th (Coaches) this week?

LaTech's RPI fell to 45 after last night's game. And if we sweep 03-cloud9 we'd have the same 12-9 conference record.
