Dabo signed a contract extension--highest paid college football coach
"The Clemson Board of Trustees Compensation Committee met Friday morning to approve a 10-year, $93-million deal for Swinney. It is the biggest contract in college football history, eclipsing the eight-year, $74-million deal Alabama awarded Nick Saban last year.

Swinney will earn $9.25 million in the first year of the contract, including $8.25 million in total salary and $1 million for a split-dollar life insurance premium. That figure pushes Swinney ahead of all Division I bowl subdivision coaches for the 2019 season."

I'm not all in with these coaches salaries. On the other hand, Dabo deserves it for what he has done. I guess if that's what the value is now for top tier coaches, Dabo deserves every penny.

Coaches salaries will soon pass the $10 million a year barrier.

Almost 20 years ago Steve Spurrier became the first coach to earn $1 million. That figure is now minimum wage for coaches.

Huh. I woulda thought Florida or Georgia or Texas would have deeper pockets and would be a bigger concern.

Texas may have more money...not the others.

But the only school Dabo might leave for is Alabama.

That sounds to me as if Clemson views Dabo as Alabama's Coach-in-Waiting. Also, the relatively small buyout signals to me that Dabo is thinking the same thing.

Yep. Dabo is in the driver's seat regardless.

What is the point of a buyout when your willing to blow 10 mill a year on a coach anyway?

The buyout is supposed to offset the salary 100 percent the first year as a way to recoup if he bolts. This with Dabo only 40-60 percent the first year then goes down.

He deserves it. Heck, he could very well end up winning more than the 6 national titles that Saban has won. He's built quite a juggernaut at Clemson and there doesn't seem to be any end in sight to it.

Yep, he's earned it.

Saban's earned it. Dabo isn't in that category yet. Call back in 10 years.

That's not the way coaches' salaries go, but he is not in Saban's category yet. Nobody has had Saban's success.

There are two things that make Saban unique:

1) All the national championships. 5 in 11 years and in a position in every year but 2010, + the one at LSU.
2) Maintaining over a long period. Its hard to avoid complacency both for the coach, the assistants and the players. But he has done that.

Saban's earned it for sure but who outside of Dabo has had this CURRENT level of success? No one. Dabo's being paid not only on what he's done in just the past several years but what he is PROJECTED to do in the years to come. Is there a hotter coach right now in all of college football? That's what he's being paid for or at least the justification for it. This is $$$big business$$$ now whether we like it or not. If I'm Clemson - I pay the man!
