I have not seen anything on hour much money UC will get out of this game.

I know that the athletic department can use the money. It does irk me a little that there is no return game, but I can (probably) get over that. I understand that this is how today's football world works.

Will we get anything besides the one game and publicity out of it?

It's not difficult to argue that Minter got screwed. He was fairly successful compared to his last three predecessors, and it was sort of a raw deal that he didn't have a chance to show what he could do with BE conference affiliation.

As for the ND game, the missing ingredient in UC's football ascent is wins over elite programs. Going back to Dantonio, and despite some excellent teams, all we have is losses against the elites: losses against Ohio State, losses against Oklahoma, the losses to Florida, Tenn. and Michigan. The closest we have come is a couple of wins against VT and WVU, but they are sort of borderline elite programs, and we lost the game to VT that mattered. It's great to have a match-up with ND; you cant beat them if you don't play them.

Not that it necessarily matters but maybe we can take advantage of the extra week to prepare for the Irish or if someone is banged up to have more time to heal.
No guarantee that they end up with a bye there. Could be a conference game.

Considering he should have been fired 3 years earlier when the entire team walked out during practice for the Motor City Bowl I'd disagree. The assistant that then managed to get the players to come back was fired immediately after the game. I had parents of current players, a dozen or more former players, and even 1 grad assistant contact me with support for firerickminter.com. 55 assistants in 10 years tells it all.

And Minter did alright... at one point he was getting paid by 3 schools.

Guys, I was using sarcasm toward folks still beefing about Brian Kelly and Nancy Zimpher/Bob Huggins. 03-wink

Forgot all about that, I was just focused the his record. But this reminds me of what one UC fan said when I questioned the wisdom of the firing: "Minter is a good coach, but he ran a lousy program."

If your going to play FCS buy games, this is a nice way to balance the schedule and give the diehard fans who love to travel for games something to look forward to. Looking forward to seeing a game in South Bend for the second time.

His trajectory has been down down, Last gig was Birmingham Iron of the now defunct AAF. No one ever gave him another HC job.

I appreciated Coach Minter for his time and effort here. He has continued to work in the football world, though not at the level he once was. His record speaks for itself...at one time the winningest and losingest coach in UC history. Selected to place 1st in the new C-USA and gets smoked at home by Tulane. Beats Wisconsin here, beats Southern Miss when ranked and behind 17 at half time. Loses in Motor City Bowl and the New Orleans Bowl. Again his record speaks for himself and he did good things for 10 years, but UC has had better coaches since. He got UC back to a bowl after 47 years.

You've GOT to win these games to have any hope. And you need to schedule LOTS of them. Going independent and doing this is probably the only way UC FB gets in the discussion for a NC.

How about an away game at LSU or Michigan on the same schedule?

That has GOT TO BE the weirdest thing... a discussion about ND and BK, derailing into a discussion about Rick Minter 04-jawdrop

This idea has crossed my mind before, but I've seen how difficult it has been for even BYU to schedule games. If we did this, we would end up with, probably, four or five home games per year, and most of our home and homes would be vs. MAC schools.

I'd fall into this camp regarding Minter too. Other than Murphy's miraculous 8-3 record in 1993, UC football had been dreadful for so long prior to Minter. Look up the scores from 80's games and its a lot of Iowa 67 UC 3 type games. We were just getting clobbered.
Under Minter this changed. We were able to hang with and even win vs solid to good P5 type programs (beat Wisky, beat Va Tech, barely lost to Kstate, all three ranked). That was a huge step up from getting massacred by those same type programs. He also got us to our first bowl in decades as you point out. Was it time to move on once we stepped up to the Big East, yes. One could argue Minter should have been given as shot but I think everybody already knew he would have been in over his head.

All in all, I don't dislike Rick and I appreciate the fact that he brought UC football to a level of mediocrity. That may sound lame, but from the depths he helped bring it up from, mediocrity was actually an nice improvement.
