Loses in Motor City Bowl and the New Orleans Bowl. Again his record speaks for himself and he did good things for 10 years, but UC has had better coaches since. He got UC back to a bowl after 47 years.
I'd fall into this camp regarding Minter too. Other than Murphy's miraculous 8-3 record in 1993, UC football had been dreadful for so long prior to Minter. Look up the scores from 80's games and its a lot of Iowa 67 UC 3 type games. We were just getting clobbered.
Under Minter this changed. We were able to hang with and even win vs solid to good P5 type programs (beat Wisky, beat Va Tech, barely lost to Kstate, all three ranked). That was a huge step up from getting massacred by those same type programs. He also got us to our first bowl in decades as you point out. Was it time to move on once we stepped up to the Big East, yes. One could argue Minter should have been given as shot but I think everybody already knew he would have been in over his head.
All in all, I don't dislike Rick and I appreciate the fact that he brought UC football to a level of mediocrity. That may sound lame, but from the depths he helped bring it up from, mediocrity was actually an nice improvement.
The game changer was getting into C-USA. Bring an independent all those years killed UC football. UC was actually pretty good in the 50s and 60s when they were in the MVC. Read Bearcats Rising and you’ll find direct quotes from players, Coaches, ADs, etc.

I would agree with all this except for one minor point. The mid eighties brought UC some decent teams that were similar to Minter teams. They could go out and be competitive with upper level teams and follow with the head scratching loss. For instance, they were within a whisker of Penn State's 86 championship team, and then lose to Ecu. I believe we had a win over Virginia Tech and followed it up with a loss to Miami OH. In 88 we lost a ton of talent and had a coach change. Murphy built and had horrible seasons until he had his 93 season and promptly left for Harvard. I thought that Rick did an excellent job under the circumstances. I had no faith that Murphy could continue to win. The 8-3 team could have easily been 5-6. All this notwithstanding, the Minter to Dantonio coaching change was the correct move. The difference between a Minter team and the Big East teams was coaching. There was plenty of talent on the Minter teams Jackson, Hawkins, Blue etc... Guys that played pro ball.

I'll give Minter this. He had a who's who list of assistant coaches come through here.

Yea he did a great job identifying coaching talent. So many future top flight coaches had a cup of coffee under minter.

Not quite sure how this turned into a "coaches of old" thread, however...
You young guys should understand how weak and inconsistent the support for our coaches was from the mid 70's into the 90's. All sports, not just football and basketball. The real wonder is how we avoided going the University of Chicago route, and drop all sports (I think they are now Div 3 or similar). UC Athletic's were really starved for money.
Potentially good football coaches like Gottfried and Watson Brown came, took a look at the facilities and support and left quickly. Yates suffered through the Coliseum fiasco.
Minter obviously had some control issues with all the talented young coaches he brought through, but he also had a rather low budget for assistants. I am thinking that both issues contributed to his high assistant turnover. That is one of the reasons I like that Fickle has a good budget for his assistants.
Oh Varsity has a nice write up on the history of Nippert Stadium. If you are not familiar with the "rebuilding travails", you should go there and read it. Good stuff.
Things can always be better, but we've got "good" problems these days.

Gonna be tough swinging both this and Hawaii in 2021, but I'll deal with the family consequences later... Start saving those pennies!

Make it a lake area weekend trip...Wawasee is pretty close to South Bend, and might help soften that blow

I'll be getting tickets from some ND fans.
I can guarantee that ND fans don't think this is an important game. The diehard Irish fans are used to Michigan, Clemson, Texas coming to town. USC visits 3 weeks after us.
This is the week after a Shamrock Series game vs Wisconsin at Soldier Field, and 2 weeks after a resurgent Purdue team plays at ND for the first time in 9 years (if Brohm lives up to his $6 million salary, Purdue will be ranked for that game).
So there will be lots of tickets available for us.

On buying the tickets. Even being in the top 5% of UCATS you still get crappy seats to bowl games. I started buying online from Stub and Vivid. 40-50 yard seat at Belk, Liberty, Military at reasonable prices.
Want to help UC sell its tickets but also want decent seats.
I always buy from UC for Miami because for half the game I can see UC score.
Likely will do the same at ND.

Impressive....my Senior year. I helped my cheerleader friends wave the UC flag on the field at Happy Valley.
And that ECU game has always marked for me the low point of UC football. If UC won that game they would finish .500. They didn't come close. It was at Nippert and we had a steady 36 degree rain the entire game. No exaggeration - there was no more than 500 people including players, coaches, officials, press and fans in Nippert that ****** day. I sat under a sheet of plastic next to some players parents. I only went because it was the last game of my undergrad days.

When my prediction comes to fruition no complaints if I repost this many times thereafter.
2/3 ain't bad. Ridder was on ESPN as a heisman candidate today. Thomas? Get a W.
