Wish him the best. He was a big fish in a small pond in High School. When you get to D1 everybody was a big fish. It’s always interesting to watch guys that were great get challenged at the next level. He should have a great opportunity to start there.

Agree - wish him the best. As fans it's hard for many of us to understand how hard it is to earn playing time at a program like ours. Good luck as a Black Bear.

I am pleased the transfers stopped. I presume the transfers did not like what they saw as their future here in Spring practice, and that resulted in a rash of transfers after practice ended.

Conventional wisdom is that there may be somewhat fewer transfer candidates next year across college football when they see how many in the portal this year end up without a chair when the music stops. We shall see.

Some were not really given a choice, were strongly advised to transfer by the staff.

Does that mean they were having their scholarship taken away?

I heard there was a list. If you found your name on the list , you were basically cut (although they said it much more nicely than this).

Every team encourages players they believe will be non-contributors to leave.

Thomas Hammock is building this team the way HE wants. Every first year coach does this that comes from outside (Carey was a holdover). They want to bring in their guys. PJ did this at WMU.

Going forward, this will cease to exist.

If a player is a freshman or sophomore, do they really know if they will be able to contribute at some point?

I could not agree more especially based on 15 days of evaluation (where most drills were non contact)!

But I get it, I think a new Coaching staff wants to have 'their guys' and they probably identified players in the transfer portal who they believed better fit their system and the only way to get the roster spots was to 'encourage' certain players to transfer.

Or maybe these guys didn't appear to be 100% on board with the new staff and Hammock is trying to set a tone.

I take it as nothing more than being honest about the outlook for that individual. Then, the player can decide how they react. Stay and fight? Stay and be patient and fight? or something else. Honesty s not a bad thing.

That kind of straight up honesty is great, but I think what makes it just a little surprising is how quickly decisions were made. How can you really determine how good a player is or can be? We have seen guys languish on the bench and only get in due to injury, and then light it up.

Just being honest with the players is most likely the reality and is the common sense answer. Maybe it was done quickly with the players best interest to transfer in mind. Hammock could be losing a great player and just doesn't realize it. But I suppose he has to make best educated guesses.

In talking with someone in the athletic department not on the football staff, size and speed combo ultimately was the fatal flaw with Koko with the current staff. Rowell, despite impressive measurables was still the fifth back with the JC transfer pushing him to sixth back behind even Valentine. Hammock is very high on Collins. So for Rowell the writing was on the wall. Best of luck to all the transfers. Seeing where Koko and Rowell ended up it was probably the right choice all the way around.

I agree. It kind of feels like we upgraded on all the guys we are losing. The only one I was really interested in was Justin Hall.

Ross Bowers for Jiya Wright
Erin Collins for Jordan Rowell
