Nice way of saying no longer playing basketball at the NCAA level.

I guess they sign "letters of intent" too.

I do like the 2 kids from same team transferring to Tallahassee CC. Guess there could be worse places.

I think they transfer to JUCO for 2 primary reasons. 1) to up their stock while playing. Obviously, many of these guys were riding pine at their former school so they have no body of work to talk about other than high school, which is a year old for a lot of them. So, by playing a year at JUCO, they can start and play 32 games and maybe attract better offers. 2) they avoid sitting for another year. If they transfer to another DI program, they have to sit a year. If you're transfer options aren't to your liking, why not go JUCO for a year, play, possibly get better or at least demonstrate skills you may not have had in high school, and then be a JUCO transfer to a new DI program and come in with the expectation of playing. Not many schools are beating down the door to grab a guy who averaged 0.4 points and 2 minutes a game.

Update:

DJ Houston, Jr - Fr PG Western Michigan - Has announced he will transfer from Kalamazoo. No word yet on where. He is from Santa Monica, CA so, it wouldn't surprise me if it's a JUCO out there somewhere.

Houston played in 24 games (0 starts) and averaged 1.7 ppg over about 9 minutes per game.

Houston is listed at 5'11" and was a 2* recruit.

Speaking of transfers we just got one from the JuCo ranks.

He was once a Redshirt Freshman at Kent State:

That’ll help as we are so undersized as a team.

And a rebounder. That was kind of a forgotten skill on last year's team.

Yup. I noted it earlier on my write-up on him. I think he's got a real role on this team. He's a big, strong body that is a rebounding machine. I'm presuming he plays D well (no idea, just guessing on his statistical profile). He won't start, but guys that can rebound like that (and score almost 10 ppg, which, I'm almost certain a grand chunk of those are 2nd chance points) is a very useful role player.

RE: 2019-20 MAC Basketball Transfers (Updated)
It's unofficial (Twitter) but it's being reported that Cortez Mosley, who NIU had apparently made an offer to at some point, has decided to attend Moberly Area Community College in Moberly, MO. I'm guessing there is an acceptance issue where he needs to spend some time in JUCO to qualify for a 4 year university. This is speculation on my part.

Also, Antonio Reeves, another player NIU has made an offer to, will be announcing his choice at 5pm this evening.

That's exactly who I mean. I was on my mobile and saw the news and tried to post it quickly.

That's a bit.....odd. Are they getting money under the table or something?

I looked into a little. I presume Tallahassee is one of those Nationally regarded JUCO programs. There's always a number of them but they rarely are consistent. Typically depends on who the coach is. So, I looked up the coach. He was just named this past year (was the interim). He's a young guy who has coached a couple different of stops in highschool (although, only once or twice as a head coach). Had some success there, coach of the year stuff. Spent a year at Kentucky Wesleyan as an assistant under some legendary coach I'd never heard of. All in all, not that impressive of a resume from a head coaching standpoint. He was head of recruiting at KW, so...I don't know.

He's clearly got a pipeline into D1 transfers. Whatever he's doing, he's selling his program as a glorified AAU program against top competition. I figure if this team doesn't go to the national championship tournament, then he's been a failure.

I get the desire by these guys. None of them were starters as freshman and most logged few minutes. Their choice is: stay where you are and never start, transfer to one of a couple of schools that might be still interested in you from when you were in HS....sit a year....probably still don't start, OR transfer to a loaded JUCO with D1 talent. Start (because you're a sophomore and were probably promised a starting spot). Get national attention (in coaching circles) because of your program. And then hopefully raise your stock enough to get better JUCO transfer options and then start as a junior at somewhere other than Chicago State.

I'd say, it's probably the smart play for guys in this situation who still want to start on some decent program.

RE: 2019-20 MAC Basketball Transfers (Updated)
NIU Update:

So, as it stands right now, NIU has 2 scholarship spots remaining to offer. They have an outstanding offer to Nathan Scott, JUCO transfer from Olney Central College, a 6'8" PF who was a 2* recruit from Neuqua Valley HS in Naperville. They also still have Trendon Hankerson playing without a scholarship.

If they can or can't land Scott (I don't he'll move the needle to much on next year's success but he is a big body and something they need for depth), I think they have to extend a scholarship to Hankerson. This guy is going to be the starting point guard next year. He logged tons of minutes last season as a true freshman walk-on and, just from watching him play, his basketball IQ appears to be extremely high. Yeah....maybe he isn't the guy to be inbounding the ball against a press. Oh well. He does a lot of stuff right.

So, that would leave one more scholarship. If it's Scott. Fine. If not, something else will probably shake loose after the NBA draft and the other top recruits who haven't committed, finally commit somewhere. Will it be as good as Scott? Probably not, but probably not much worse either.

Hankerson isn’t the starting point guard if German is back. I’m pretty sure Hankerson will be on scholarship for next year.

I would put the chances of German being back at less than 5%.

Either way. He's a sophomore and he'll be the first guard off the bench. He deserves a scholarship.
