Humber's perfecto
On this date 7 years ago Phillip Humber had his perfect game. Bill Cousins, former Rice SID, said there have been 23 perfect games in MLB history and he has had long conversations with 2 of them, David Cone being the other.

What an interesting career Philip had. Although his MLB career was no easy road (due to injuries IIRC), he had that one perfect day in Seattle.

And for all of his greatness at Rice, his postseason career generally was no easy road, except for that one perfect night in Omaha.

The Sallyport (Summer 2003) described his work that night as follows:

Quote:"But the ultimate clutch performance belonged to the enigmatic Humber. Entering the Stanford series, Humber had gone five straight starts without a win. But in Rice's final game, with the national title on the line, he was masterful, baffling Stanford's veteran hitters with a disabling mix of three types of pitches. Humber allowed just eight base runners in his complete-game victory, the first in a CWS title game since 1993."

I tell people it was the second-happiest day of my life.
