B8:

Beaulaurier watches his third pitch, strike 3.

Comeaux ... "a one-out dinger" ... just over the LF wall, just fair. "He lifted it up just high enough. The wind did the rest."

HooWOOO!!

7-5, Rice ... 1 out.

B8, cont'd:

Gneiting "hits a screamer to 2nd base." 4-3. 2 outs.

Cruz slaps an opposite field single to left! "His second 4-hit game of the season."

Dunlap lofts a high fly to deepish right-center. F-9.

7-5, Rice ... after 8.

Tying run on at 1st, 1 out for MTSU. We pretty much have to go with Jefferies here though - no other viable option I don't believe.

T9:

Jefferies back on the mound.

> Wigginton hist a 3-1 pitch back up the middle for a single.

> Carnevale hits a liner to left field ... "This is dropped into ... the GLOVE of Cox." F-7. 1 out.

> Stratinsky (pinch hitter) ... after a close 1-2 pitch that could have been strike 3 ... a pitch way high and outside ... then one down that middle that's lined into right field. Single. Lead runner stops at 2nd.

Pitching coach out to the mound.

We always have to make it difficult. Never easy.
Nice sweep.
Puts us at .500 in CUSA play going into a tough schedule stretch.

T9, cont'd:

Ball 1
Called strike 1
Ball 2, low
Wiff, on a pitch neat the low-outside corner!
Solid single to left. Lead runner held at 3rd. Arrgh!!

Bases loaded, 1 out.

"A double play would end it."

#9 hitter, Tanner Parker, up.

> Foul.
> Foul. "Parker cutting for University, over there."

(Pinch runner at 1st. The go-ahead run.)

> Ball 1, very high! 1-2 count.

> "The game-ending double play!!" WooHOO!! A bouncer up the middle ... Edwards tosses to Cruz at the bag, and an accurate throw to 1st.

Rice wins, 7-5.

Sweeeep!!!

Good job doing what needed to be done today to get the sweep, especially battling back from the early defensive problems that allowed 3 unearned runs to score.

Whew-- looked as if Kendall had just about run out of gas.

Nice come back victory today, especially since we gifted MTSU 4 of their 5 runs-- 3 unearned runs on 3 errors, and another run on a typical Gayle wild-ason (2 BBs, HBP, 2 WPs). Terrific game by the top of our order as Comeaux, Gneitting and Cruz went a combined 8-15, 2 doubles, 6 runs scored and 2 RBIs.

Back to .500 in conference play, but we play the toughest part of our schedule over the final four weeks. The only top team we've already played is FAU. Both LaTech and USM have been en fuego of late, and WKU is playing well, as well.

We should still handle WKU. 5-4 in those 3 series should be the goal, although 4-5 would not be a disgrace.

Well, WKU is 12-6-1 at home. Frankly, I think we'll both series to LaTech and USM, even though they're at home, and the final series at Marshall is no cake walk. The Herd are tied with FAU for the best offense in the conference, and what concerns me most about them is their ultra-aggressive baserunning. They already have 62 stolen bases, and we know how vulnerable we are to base stealing teams.

Also, although we are now tied with WKU (and MTSU) at 9-9 in conference, WKU features 3 of the top 4 hitters in the conference, including the front runner for conference POY, Jake Sanford (.407/.482/.862, 17 HRs, 13 doubles/triples, 52 RBIs, 47 runs scored). He's leading the conference in SLG, OPS, hits, runs, RBIs and total bases, and is second to his teammate in AVG.

What I get out of that is that the opponent has scored first 21 times.

Just curious if you were at the game today. Kendall and Gayle kept us in this game and kept it close giving us an opportunity to come back. Gayle and his CB looked really good for 2-1/3 innings. The WP’s were on spiked CB’s that in most cases are called from the bench with confidence in Collins to block which he did. It’s not like he threw it to the backstop. The HBP was on a bunt attempt that most at the game, including coaches, felt the batter offered at. A double play was not made after SS and 2B ran into each other. Not an error as DP cannot be assumed but it was a textbook DP if not for that. Kendall looked great for 2-3 innings as well with just a slight struggle in the 9th which to his credit he got through with no damage.

Comments without context are just words on a page that don’t tell the story. I appreciate brevity as much as the next person but I’m also a believer in providing contextual info. Just my thoughts as alway. Great series sweep. Let’s enjoy it for today and give credit to the team for a well played series.

Agree, especially on Gayle. Walked 2, 4 Ks, though both of those are suspect because of the horrid ball/strike calls behind the plate. Better repertoire, better control - at least compared to his history.

If he can repeat that level of performance he can be a real asset. And as long as I'm talking about improved play, the performance gain for Kravetz, Dunlap and Cox is remarkable. Watching that development is one of the main reasons I like following college baseball. My all-time prizes in that category are jeff Neimann and Tony Cingrani.
