My thought exactly. Don’t care for the name but I like the logo and colors. I think there’s another professional team around Charlotte with similar colors...

Beyond the literal "City" name, 27 of the 30 MLS franchises, including the new expansion teams, have stuck with the name of a city instead of going with a "regional" name to appeal to fans outside the city itself.

I would like to see a little more creativity in some of these names, but I do agree about going away from the traditional American format of "city name" and "nickname." That's perfectly fine and good for other sports, but soccer does have its own culture. I think going with the more European style of naming does help create a different identity for fans.

I know this is to be more in line with European teams, but I'd also bet that they know their demographic. People that are into soccer in 2020 live in the city or in the closest suburbs.

The 3 that aren’t cities: Colorado Rapids, Minnesota United, and New England Revolution.

All major pro teams in Minnesota are called “Minnesota.” Half of the Big 4 pro teams in Colorado are called “Colorado,” the others are “Denver.” The name “New England” is not unique to the MLS team. At least there’s some consistency.

MLS expansion team in Las Vegas step closer to reality
[Image: 16072670_web1_Bucks-Parade-Basketball.jpg?crop=1]

Score another one for Las Vegas.

Billionaires Wes Edens and Naseef Sawiris have entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with Major League Soccer to move toward bringing an expansion team to Southern Nevada.

Pending final agreement, Las Vegas is poised to become home to the MLS’ 30th team, winning out over competing bids from Phoenix and San Diego. It is unclear when the team could potentially begin play in Las Vegas, but in December MLS Commissioner Don Garber said the 30th team would not begin play before 2023.

Las Vegas team will likely be called the Villains. Owners also co-own Aston Villa in the Premier League.
