Because the state is broke, Higher Education is one of the first places hit hard. They need to close a couple of schools and consolidate.

It’s not that easy. Closing a couple schools will devastate a few towns and likely regions of the state. Tough times for many

Or they could stop taxing everything but the air we breath to help stop the exodus....

The country is broke not just Illinois. The national debt is climbing at the highest rate ever the past two years and it wasn’t good before then.

We have the worst bond rating. We, as a state, owe 8 billion in current liabilities. In the Governor's budget, there is no mention of controlling costs, just new taxes. Taxes will never catch up to spending.

This just isn't true...don't spread fake news.

The Nat'l debt rose by 7.23 in 2018 and 2.58% in 2017...which still sucks.

but....it is far from the highest rate and the 80's were even in the upper teens for debt % growth, below is the chart.

2008 15.93%
2009 15.06%
2010 13.92%
2011 8.54%
2012 7.95%

There's nothing fake about the fact the national debt continues to go unchecked.
Don't forget a rise of 7.23 is compared to 2017 and that's hitting the pocketbooks of people today much harder than the 7.95% rise in 2012.

Your comment doesn't make any sense, wages are up since 2012...stop with more fake stuff.

This is not the right forum for this so I am not commenting after this post. I was replying to the false statement that the last 2 years was highest % increase ever for the Nat'l debt....just not true.

43 of 50 states have assets that exceed their liabilities. Illinois is one of only seven states that have liabilities greater than assets. Illinois’ liabilities are an astounding $215 billion, which are 277% greater than our assets. That’s just awful.

Once again Illinois State is busting at the seams and running like a well oiled machine.
State budget is not dropping their enrollment.

RE: SIU enrollment under 10,000
I hate the thought of closing a SIUC or WIU or EIU, and what that would do to those cities. I don't hear anyone in the Illinois legislature seriously talking about this as a way to balance budgets. Things will need to get alot worse, alot, for closure talk to get serious.

What could happen is a long slow painful decline for some of these schools, program cuts over a generation. We could see a school like SIUC drop their football program, or move to smaller school status. You'd see this move long before a whole school is actually closed.

RE: SIU enrollment under 10,000
It wasn’t that along ago SIU was a ‘hot spot’ school. Around 2007, they were ranked #2 party school by one rag behind only Arizona State.

Then some pseudointellectual academics came in, “cleaned up”, washed its hands of the halloween party, and the school no longer had an identity. It’s never recovered.

SIU has a nice campus and unique region (Little Egypt). WIU and EIU (Coles County 03-puke) aren’t as lucky. SIU shot itself in the foot opening up SIUE. SIUE gradually consumed SIU’s students and will one day break off.

WIU certainly wishes it could relocate to Quad Cities.
