RE: SIU enrollment under 10,000
I wasn't trying to get into a pissing match about Illinois government. Just pointing out that the budget issues are forcing less and less money to high education. All schools except U of I (big endowment too) and UIC are shrinking. These schools have a big infrastructure with formerly bloated administrations. Consolidating would save money.

The Nat'l debt rose by 7.23 in 2018 and 2.58% in 2017...which still sucks.

There's nothing fake about the fact the national debt continues to go unchecked.
Don't forget a rise of 7.23 is compared to 2017 and that's hitting the pocketbooks of people today much harder than the 7.95% rise in 2012.
I’m sorry....nothing you have written there is about Illinois debt and the fact there’s one common factor after all these years.....Mike.....Madigan

Continues to get re-elected as most of the voters in his district have connected jobs. We can only hope the Feds get him soon.

SIU has a nice campus and unique region (Little Egypt). WIU and EIU (Coles County ) aren’t as lucky. SIU shot itself in the foot opening up SIUE. SIUE gradually consumed SIU’s students and will one day break off.
WIU certainly wishes it could relocate to Quad Cities.
I remember SIU was a prime destination and had some decent athletics and a basketball program that was kicking butt. My how things have changed. They just need to bring Carbondale and Edwardsville together.

It’s unbelievable how people turn a blind eye. This guys is as corrupt as there is and is a huge reason for the mess Illinois is in.

Per the article, 12,617 students st SIUE to be exact. What is the relationship between the two schools. I know they both have their own athletic teams, but are they administered separately?

Carbondale is the flagship and thus “SIU”. It was suicidal of SIU to start SIUE because SIUE will break off in the next 10-20 years after decades of slowly siphoning students who would’ve gone to Carbondale.
It’s a replay of ISU (Terre Haute) and USI (Evansville) in Indiana. USI started as a regional campus of ISU, slowly suctioned students who would’ve gone to ISU, broke off into its own entity, and now enjoys double ISU’s endowment.
Honestly, government should just reanoint SIUE “WIU Leathernecks” and shut down the Macomb campus. WIU would then enjoy a successful school and geographic proximity to St Louis.

RE: SIU enrollment under 10,000
a large percentage of students are opting to attend university closer to home or one close enough they can live at home and not pay $10-$12 K a year for room and board. The massive growth of the COmmunity Colleges is a large factor also. IT was only a matter of time before Madison & St Clair counties (IL side of the Mississippi) got a public U, there are over 500K people on the IL side of the river, more than Danville, CHampaign, DeKalb, & Bloomington Normal combined.
Community college students may already have a job they either like or one that at least pays decent and they may not want to go to a university that will require them to move away from home and give up that job.
Chicago area HS students IMO just dont' see the big attraction to travel hundreds of miles from home to Carbondale, Macomb, CHarleston and are instead opting for Loyola, DePaul & UIC instead.
COD students top 10 transfer universities for the 2018 class are:
1) UIC 187
2) NIU 166
3) Lewis U 145 (Private)
4) DePaul 141 (Private)
5) ISU 125
6) Elmhurst College 119 (Private)
7) UIUC 101
8) Chamberlin College of Nursing 91 (private)
9) North Central College 83 (Private)
10) Benedictine U 65 (Private)
6 of the top 10 are Private U's, a surprise to me.

Also, in regards to SIUE (and in the other commenter bringing up Indiana State/Evansville) consider how many students SIUE is preventing from going to school in Missouri? Sure, they siphon students from SIU, and WIU, but they don't siphon 13k students from those schools. A large number of students (probably at least half) would be going to school some where across the river if SIUE wasn't there, so they are providing a benefit to residents and keeping students IN STATE, which should be looked at as a positive.
