RE: Pitt and ‘Cuse home and home!
Those are going to be some tough non-conf schedules; particularly in 2020. I think it is unfair to Lester. It would be nice if he had an easy schedule every other year. I'm sure he wont complain, but playing Cincinnati, Notre Dame, and Syracuse to start a season; yikes!

Lester was the force behind scheduling these teams. You want to play Monmouth, Wagner (Fleck scheduled these teams) every year or play a Boise style schedule? You have to remember the playoff system is about to change. If a G5 is included as expected, the G5 schools winning their conference including wins against weak FCS and lower tier G5s are going to early Dec bowls. A G5 conference champ sitting at 10-2 with the higher ranked schedule is going to be selected over the 12-1, 13-0 school who didn't play anybody.

Syracuse and Pitt are 2 of the more "winnable" P5's out there, we recruit similar athletes. They are not world beaters. These are the types of P5's we should be scheduling, not UM, Notre Dame, etc. There will still most likely be the 1 FCS every year also..

Kudos to WMU to get them to come to Waldo though.

Be careful what you wish for. Syracuse finished 15th last year and led Clemson until deep in the 4th Quarter at Clemson. Dino Babers is starting to build something big and I see Cuse starting a run of yearly ranked teams.

Coach Lester is a good guy and most Cuse fans would like to see WMU do well under his leadership.

Hopefully some of you can drive the 9 hours over this September. Feel free to ping me about visiting and tailgating.

I think Cuse will drop off a bit next year with the departure of Dungey.

How do you know Lester is behind this? And who is expecting the G5 to be included in the next playoff expansion, I think it’s possible but certainly not expected.

I agree you had a historically good year. At least we could score points and make it somewhat competitive in a mediocre year for us. On the flip side, we could barely get a 1st down against UM. Hence why I’d rather be playing teams like Syracuse and Pitt vs teams like UM, OSU, etc..

Michigan would have been destroyed by Clemson.

We will still be playing the Monmouths and Wagners of the world, regardless of the P5 teams we play. Im not sure why you would be critical of the schedules we played under Fleck. Didnt you enjoy 2016? that should be the model for future schedules.

I'm not critical of playing decent P5 schools, and I agree that Pitt and Syracuse should be schools which in most years we should be able to expect a competitive game, and a realistic chance to win. But playing three teams in our non-conference schedule, all of which would likely be picked to win the MAC if they were in our conference, is a tall order in any given season. I like either UM or MSU, and then a lower level P5, like Illinois, and then a Wagner/Monmouth type, and a Sunbelt. I realize that Cincinnati isnt a P5, but its a pretty solid team most seasons.

I think the majority of years, where possible, should have one FCS "tune up" game among the 4 opponents. Not to mention that W might save us come bowl season like last year.

As Major has said in the past, would be nice to see more regional Illinois State and Youngstown State types as opposed to the Wagners and Nichols of the world.

I thought FCS wins don't count toward bowl eligibility?

RE: Pitt and ‘Cuse home and home!
Can we dispense with the Fleck/Lester stuff? You guys sound like old ladies fighting over whose apple pie recipe is better. Well, it's all apple pie in this case. Warm apple pie, and I love it. I can't tell any meaningful difference between our scheduling philosophy from the Darnell to the Cubit to the Fleck to the Lester years; one FCS team, lots of Big 10 teams, strategic opportunities for away games with big-time opponents, and some home and home series with P5 schools, be it VT, Indiana, MSU, or Syracuse.

In that time, we've never played a schedule full of world-beaters, have always had one easy non-conference game, have not shied away from playing big teams, and have provided opportunities for big home games. It's mysteriously as if there is a common denominator in the scheduling process among all those coaches, yet some of yous guys stick to the criticizing because you seem to have that one coach you hold in low beauREGARD!

RE: Pitt and ‘Cuse home and home!
What this scheduling accomplishes is an assured 2 home/2 away OOC schedule every year. There have been a number of years in the past where we open the season 1 home/3 away.

Now as far as our annual FCS gig... this isn't going away, despite a few assumptions I'm seeing here and on M-Live. We still have one open date left for 2020, 2021, 2022, and beyond. This will most certainly be filled by an FCS team.

And given that our other 3 OOC games each future season will be against P5s and very competitive G5s, I don't mind an easier "tune up" game thrown in there.
