The offense sucked. But accuracy is accuracy. He made the same mistakes in the scrimmage, missing open receivers downfield. He just has zero touch on that pass. I’d like him to throw more posts and slants. I think he’s better at those.

The offense was uber productive every year up until the point Childers became the QB.

Woof....Graham was...dare I say it....worse

Childers and Graham are almost the same guy. Graham just seemed so awful relative to the qbs who came before him. But given the same amount of attempts, Childers and Graham produce identical numbers.

MC: 3,849 yds, 5.8 y/a, 31 td, 15 int, 118 rating. 1,004 rush yds, 3.0 y/a
RG: 3,871 yds, 5.8 y/a, 40 td, 24 int, 114 rating. 1,094 rush yds, 3.2 y/a

I don't think its any mistake they are the same guy.

Great great info. See, what one can conclude for that is that tossing Graham aside was NOT for a better QB. He was tossed aside for the SAME QB statistically. That, IMHO, is not good. More importantly, it tells us that the system is producing those numbers-- or even better said, the way that staff implemented that system.

Anyone who has it seared into the brain that if you make a mistake, you could be gone-- that one interception can get you benched permanently, is going to do everything to not throw that interception. You know how you can make sure you don't throw an interception? Don't throw the ball. Or only throw if the receiver is wide open (and in that case you are so nervous you miss him). Of course, to be fair, the receivers the last couple of years have not helped a great deal.

Anyway--- ancient history now. I expect QB's that make mistakes! And I welcome the new era. Some INT's will happen. It comes with the territory. So what? Some are just bad bad throws, some are bad coaching calls given the situation. The bad calls that result in a pick 6, those I will continue to complain about, if they happen. I hope they do not.

Anyway, new era, baby!!!

RE: Childers not shying away from competition
I would like to see what Childers can do in the new offense. He was never allowed/called on to make certain throws. With practice and maturity, he might be able to make those throws if allowed by new staff. That way, we could determine was it lack of talent or bad coaching.scheme?

I suspect it is more than making the throws with Childers. He doesn't seem to have the instinct he needs. Put pressure on him & he's frozen holding the ball.
I'm done with Childers - really hope for a breath of fresh air at QB this fall.

Yea, I can't tell from the scrimmage who is better in game situations between Childers and Thompson since they don't tackle the QB when they run and they don't hit the QB in the pocket either.

When a receiver was open & it was a long pass - Childers rarely made a successful pass. Over thrown, under thrown... I just don't have any confidence in him at all.
We'll see what this fall brings.

That was in a Rod Carey offense where only a few routes were run. Plus in a Carey offense missing the receiver by 20 yards was seen as the."smart play" to avoid turnovers. As year goes on Carey led offenses lost all faith in their ability and lacked confidence.

Completing the pass was option A. Missing by 20 yards was option B. Childers chose B. Not by choice, but by lack of ability.

The amount of bull that he will write just to cover anybody and to make Carey look bad is just ridiculous.

DeKALB — Even after winning a Mid-American Conference championship last season, returning football starters are fighting for their spots all over again.

With the departure of former Head Coach Rod Carey and the arrival of Thomas Hammock, returning starters like redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcus Childers are having to prove they have a role to play in the new offense.

Childers said the players, new and old, won’t shy away from competition.

“We all embrace the grind,” Childers said. “We always want to get better, and the best way to do that is through competition.”

The former MAC Freshman of the Year threw for 2,175 yards to go with 15 touchdowns last season. This spring, Childers is in competition with junior Anthony Thomas, redshirt first-year Jiya Wright and Drake Davis, transfer first-year from the University of Illinois.

Childers said it’s not just quarterbacks competing, it’s across the board.

“There’s great competition between some of us,” Childers said. “I know in the quarterback room we have a big quarterback battle going on - same in the running back room. There’s just good competition everywhere.”

The backfield’s other half has also been highly competitive. Junior returning starter Tre Harbison, senior Marcus Jones and sophomore Jordan Neddles will be vying for the starting running back position.

With all new coaches and an all new system, Childers said the competition for starting positions is tougher this year than in the past. The quarterback said the competition makes everyone better because it forces everyone to up their game every day.

“With the new system we got put into, everyone has to learn it,” Childers said. “I know we’re all still trying to learn it and get the basics down. We’re making strides everyday.”

The competition for the starting quarterback position doesn’t end Saturday when the team plays its annual spring game. Ross Bowers, who is transferring from the University of California, is expected to join the team after the spring semester, according to multiple media reports.

Bowers started 12 games for the Bruins in 2017, throwing for 3,039 yards and 18 touchdowns. Bowers took a medical redshirt last season after reaggravating a thumb injury.

Childers said the locker room isn’t afraid of more competition, saying he wants to play with winners who can compete.

“We’re happy to have a new guy in the room,” Childers said. “We want champions. We want guys who want to play for us and want to get better. I can’t wait to see him get here and have a little fun.”

I thought Bowers was coming to us from UC Berkeley (the Golden Bears), not the UCLA Bruins as indicated in the article.
