Wake Forest Opening a Medical School in Charlotte
https://www.wfae.org/post/atrium-wake-fo...l#stream/0
Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center will establish a four-year medical school in Charlotte in conjunction with Atrium Health, the systems said in a statement Wednesday.
The campus will have the Wake Forest School of Medicine name, said Dr. Julie Ann Freischlag, the chief executive of Wake Forest Baptist and medical-school dean.
Freischlag said she will remain in Winston-Salem. Winston-Salem would gain scientific and analytics jobs, the systems said.
The goal is to complete an agreement later this year, with the new campus opening in 2021 or 2022.
“We will be one medical school with two sites,” Freischlag said. “Medical students will have their choice to be in Charlotte or Winston-Salem.”
Charlotte is the largest metro area in the country without a medical school.
Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles said the medical is "as big as any business recruitment that we’ve done."

So WFU already had a business school in Charlotte, now this... will it be much longer before they move the entire campus?

Fun bit of trivia, Wake's medical school moved to Winston-Salem 23 years before the undergrad school moved out of the little town of Wake Forest.

Wow.
I'll admit, my first reaction was ho-hum ... then I read that Charlotte doesn't have a medical school. Which made me think WTF?
This is a big deal. Congrats to Wake Forest.

Charlotte doesn't have a full 4 year medical school but Atrium already host 3rd & 4th year students for UNC as well as other programs to train doctors. This is a big deal since this will combine a well regarded fully integrated healthcare system with a well regarded academic medical school which could benefit both. I wouldn't doubt if Wake expands grad offerings in more fields but I don't see the main campus moving again

Wow, they'd need at least 2 buildings that size to hold the student body nowadays...

RE: Wake Forest Opening a Medical School in Charlotte
Interesting that it ended up being Wake who is opening the school in Charlotte. It was always supposed to be UNC Health that opened a school in Charlotte. UNC even bought up some prime property on East Blvd near CMC Main that was supposed to be for a school. They tore down one Charlotte's favorite restaurants, East Blvd Bar and Grill, for the new 'school'. This was in the mid 2000's and now the land it just a park. I could still see UNC try to creep back in but I guess it wouldn't be with Atrium who owns CMC Main. Also, Charlotte needs a law school too! I hope they let UNC Charlotte fill that need.
