RE: Brannen's staff
Looks like John Brannen isn't messing around: he's trying to pull Alabama assistant and lead recruiter Antoine Pettway to join him here at Cincinnati. Antoine is an Alabama alum currently making $280k, so that's a pretty gutsy move. But the two were apparently on Anthony Grant's staff together.

https://collegesportsmaven.io/alabama/ap...HobrOb1Lg/

247Sports has rated Antoine Pettway as one of the top 10 recruiters in the nation for 3 straight classes: 2017 (3rd), 2018 (9th), and 2019 (7th).

This would be a hell of a pull.

Strong move. You'd have to think though if Alabama really wants him they've got P5 money and they will be able to match any financial offer. Hopefully he looks at the relationship with Brannen and the opportunity to win being much more here.

Fingers crossed here. I imagine he has some connections. He's treating this like a top 25 coaching job.

This would be a hell of a pull.

Lead recruiter for Trendon Watford, current uncommitted 5* PF in the 2019 class.

He would be a get...strong shot across the bow for many thinking that UC isn't prime real estate in the basketball heirarchy. One thing to note, Pettway is a candidate for the Kennesaw State HC job too.

I would love to see a mix of "new blood, new ideas" guys and some UC alumni.

I would also love to see some UC alumni on a development track to get their own HC gigs. Pitino and several others took a lot of pride in getting HC gigs for his assistants. It seems a way to promote the best from your staff.

Love this move.

It also tells me he will go after kids that potentially our former coach wouldn't have tried because he 'knew who he could and couldn't get'. I know you have to be careful you don't waste time on those that you have low chance at, but I get the feeling he is going to try a bit more. Guy came out swinging.

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take.

One downside of Pettway then, I guess, is that he might not be here long if he is already a candidate for a HC job. But that's the caliber of people we want here at Cincinnati. From what I could tell though, Kennesaw State's last HC only made about 175k per year. I'm guessing that CJB is offering him about twice that amount to be our associate head coach.

Even better if he can bring one of the Bama recruits with him. Just going after Pettway shows Brannen is serious about keeping us a top team.

Larry Davis was making $328K in 2016. Savino was making $254K. You can search here: https://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/d...-2013.html

Seems like UC should actually be able to give him a raise.

Interesting with Pettway's backround as we've recruited that area of the country fairly well with Tre and JE. The southern pipeline.

Good find on those assistant salary figures. There should be money in the cookie jar between Mick's buyout and Brannen's lower starting pay. I like him swinging for the fence with a top tier recruiter. And if Pettway is the shooting star, maybe he's here two years and stockpiles some talent before taking a head coaching gig. UC gets winning talent in the near term and Brannen's coaching tree grows a branch. That's the kind of progression we haven't really seen the past decade.

The more I learn, the more I believe Brannen is a winner and will take UC higher.

Also...considering the assistant pool is larger now that it was under Cronin, he could probably bump him significantly in pay, give him the Associate HC role, and go from there.
