UA BOT Meeting Tidbits
Fess has been elected permanent chancellor.

England did some ass kissing of Fess. Didn't hurt that Fess named a building after England.

Tuition increases for lots of the medical areas. None for out of state students going to Alabama. I think an increase for OOS coming to UAB.

UA refinances debts and goes on a spending spree starting with Tutwiler Dorm for women.

I believe them taking over UAB Health Systems is somehow allowing them to hand blank checks to Tuscaloosa.

Just stuff that I recollect from meeting notes from Ed Enoch.

I could be wrong on some facts.

They certainly aren’t spending on physician salaries. They are non competitive especially in the specialized fields.

Fess as chancellor sucks. He was nearing the term limit as a board member so they had to find another way to keep him around. Should we just prepare to bend over again?

UAB also had a bond issue: $186M for the university and $130M for the health system.

The university bonds are going towards the new science & engineering building, new residence hall, new IT center, new track & field facility, utility work, and property acquisitions.

What does this even mean, there has been no change in the way UAB is managed. The UAB Health System has always been part of the UA system

He probably is referring more to the HSF. When it was first established it was a separate entity and controlled physician compensation

They aren’t competitive with private practices, but few universities are. I haven’t looked in a long time, but the last time I did, UAB was pretty much inline with other university medical centers

What we've discovered is that there is a premium to get people to move to Alabama. We're in Huntsville which isn't exactly a back water town and to get people to consider us we have to be more than competitive on compensation. Being in line with other academic centers, for Birmingham, means you're noncompetitive for the best talent

I was unaware that had changed. The "UAB Health System" has always been made up of separate entities like the university, the hospital, and the HSF, but managed as one

At any rate, the fact that they approved bonds separately for UA, UAB, and the UABHS shows that they aren't using hospital money to build frat houses in Tuscaloosa

No, it only shows they aren't doing it any longer.

I'm as anti-Tuscaloosa as anyone here, and I think the appointment of Fess as permanent Chancellor is the worst thing to happen to UAB since Carol Garrison resigned, but there is no evidence that money from UAB has been transferred to Tuscaloosa. People would be in prison. And while the Board holds a lot of clout I doubt they have the pull or money to convince PricewaterhouseCoopers to risk the existence of their firm to facilitate an Enron-level financial fraud

The UABOT is an anvil tied around UAB's neck.

Once the stadium is built, re-start FreeUAB.

Mixed up is right that have NEVER used money from Health system or UAB for UAT. In fact, tampering with Bond money would be securities fraud and PWC, lawyers and Fess would be jail birds.

With our new Chancellor, Kay Ivey ruining rural health care (patients dumped on UAB) and agreed limit from SOM for deficit help. Athletics faces challenges and real battles for resources. We need to actually tell the truth and stop this financially ignorant - very FALSE narrative that UAT uses UAB money.

It never should've stopped. Fess and Co. have had free run to do plenty of damage in the meantime

I'm not saying that thee is proof that it ever happened. But you likewise have no proof that it never did. No one going to prison could just means no one ever got caught. Like all governmental corruption gets punished.

As an employee, and I am assuming you are still employed by the university, you should be very careful about speaking out on anything regarding the finances of the university. You never know who may be watching.

We have the audited financial reports signed off on by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Not the Word of God to be sure but between that and knowing how apoplectic folks on the East Side of campus would be if their money was being siphoned away to Tuscaloosa (I mean they were pretty angry when it was going to the west side of UAB as it was) I am pretty satisfied that UAB money is not building frat houses in Tuscaloosa

I'm happy you are satisfied and with the media scrutiny of the 21st century it is likely such things are not currently going on.

BUT never is a very long time and you cannot state with absolute certainty that nothing similar has never happened. As I cannot state with absolute certainty that it did. Any such claims without being privy to all of the pertinent information is nothing more than supposition in either direction.

The only thing proven when speaking in absolutes is that the speaker will almost always be absolutely incorrect.

And that is my point.
