RE: Murphy to UCLA???
(04-12-2019 07:38 AM)RamyEMU Wrote: Good points, everyone. The truth is, Murphy will probably make similar pay as an assistant at a major as he does a head coach at a mid major. And probably much better perks at the major. The reason to be head coach at a mid-major is either to use it as a means to show your credentials as a head coach for the next step or you have such a personality that you have to be the one in charge. Murphy made a nice run at it, but he never built a “successful” program and probably never will- so the next step is rpbablt not coming. To the contrary, he is on the hot seat so likely will be looking for an assistant job in the near future. Why not take it now when an ideal opportunity presents itself.
Makes total sense to me. And I am a little excited for the next stage of EMU basketball. Though, we may regret getting what we wished for. Murphy’s retooled line up with his system would have had EMU winning some losing some once again. Looking at a dismal year now.
I say ask Braun for a favor to coach the team for a year until a replacement can be found. Maybe that taste/test will bring him out of retirement.
Damned good post Ramy!
Unfortunately, however, Ben lost the fire at California, got axed and never picked it up again at Rice. I'm an old man like Ben and at some point you lose the fire in your competitive belly, he no longer is relevant. Bronkema at Ferris State is the most compelling case for Braun II.

I wonder what boss man thinks of this rumor. I'm sure he's seen this by now.

Murphy to UCLA???
Things like this move quick. Since there haven't been any announcements yet I'm starting to think it's not happening.

I wouldn't be surprised if there aren't 'contingencies..."
If I read this article correctly, a UC asst will join Cronin at UCLA if he doesn't get the UC HC job, himself.
The question then becomes if he (Savino) takes the last available coaching slot?
The slot might not be fully unspoken for as of now so we are all in a waiting game... (my best guess).

RE: Murphy to UCLA???
"Mick told reporters as he made remarks at his introductory press conference that Darren Savino deserves to be a candidate to replace him as the Bearcats' head coach. He added that Savino would join him on the Bruins' staff if UC doesn't hire him as head coach." Elsewhere it mentions that if he comes to UCLA it would be as assoc. head coach.
So my take after searching the L.A. Times and Cincy papers is that the Assoc HC job at UCLA is Savino's if he wants it (i.e., doesn't get the UCincy HC job).
If the UCLA assoc HC job goes unfilled (fill in the blank).................

Maybe this Savino dude will take the EMU job if he doesn't get the Cinci job.

RE: Murphy to UCLA???
Here is a CBS Sports list of coaching changes (and vacancies).
If Murphy wants to bail on EMU, there is a HC vacancy at Howard in Washington, D.C. Pay will be less. Pressure to win less. Program seemed to be headed upward before the coach got relieved of his job presumably following a 2-game suspension.
I can only speak for myself, but Washington, D.C. and So. Cal (L.A. area) are, IMHO, great places to live. No offense to NDSU, but Fargo, N.D. is pretty damn cold in winter. I'm not sure it is for most people. Ditto, I doubt someone like Murphy would be happy in a small town, not near anything.

RE: Murphy to UCLA???
Signing day starts Weds and we have some verbals that could sign that day. But we don't know exactly what the status of our coach is or why the AD didn't take immediate action to clarify Murphy's status or if Murphy let the AD know hey I am thinking about moving on my own. Yes situations change sometimes in unexpected ways. IF Murphy moves on hopefully our AD has a short list of potential candidates for interviews.

I have a feeling the AD is sending every single message to Murphy that you should leave or be fired next year if you don't preform well or play man-to-man defense.

RE: Murphy to UCLA???
Well now that Cronin has brought his associate head coach Savino from Cincy to UCLA, I seriously doubt that Murphy is to LA as well. Number two at a hallowed Power 5 program could have been interpreted as a lateral move from a head coaching job at EMU. Heading there as anything less than power assistant would be waving the white flag on his way out of Ypsilanti.
Rob Murphy year nine should be interesting.

Interesting in the sense that instead of doing a half-a***d job, he'll be doing what, a 1/4 a***d job? Oh man, will he be phoning it in this season.
