RE: 2019-2020 Roster Movement
Left-handed PG's seem to be a UC trend. Although I'm not sure MAW should actually be called a PG. He played off-ball a fair amount in HS and is said to be a shooter first and a passer second.

He reminds me of Kevin Johnson. Both good, but not elite athletes. Both excellent shooters, but not great slashers and not relied on to be the main guy. Hopefully MAW can be better at decision making than Kevin Johnson was early in his career.

I suspect we are still trying to add a true PG. MAW may handle the ball at times, but I think his main roll this year will be as a spot up shooter. I expect us to add a grad transfer PG/SG (2nd Cumberland ideally), a freshman true PG and a center (ideally a freshman but might be a grad transfer given the lack of available options).

He'll probably end up at Memphis.

Why not? Everyone else does.

RE: 2019-2020 Roster Movement
Roster update after the McNeal commit:

1. Tre Scott (Sr.)
2. Jarron Cumberland (Sr.)
3. Chris McNeal (Sr.)
4. Trevor Moore (Jr.)
5. Keith Williams (Jr.)
6. Mamoudou Diarra (Soph.)
7. Prince Toyambi (Fr.)
8. LaQuill Hardnett (Fr.)
9. Jeremiah Davenport (Fr.)
10. Mika Adams-Woods (Fr.)
11. Chris Vogt (transfer year, will be a Jr.)

10 guys for next year with 2 scholarships available.

Things are falling into place pretty well, it seems.

I have concerns with our bigs. Outside of Scott, they're largely unknowns. Otherwise, I agree. Pretty nice job back filling the roster.

Hopefully McNeal worked on his 3 point shooting. I'm guessing his effectiveness at this level will largely depend on whether he can be a mid 30s three point shooter or not.

Abysmal doesn't even do it justice...for his career he is currently shooting just a shade above 30% from 3 on an average of 4.4 attempts per game. What's even more worrisome is the fact that he shoots twice as many 3's as 2's, meaning he seems to think he is a good shooter and he only gets to the line twice a game while averaging 25mpg over 68 games played. All of those numbers scare the hell out of me if he's the guy leading the charge. One bright spot is that he is averaging over an assist more per game than JJ did last season...which could just be a result of differing pace of play.

Can he be much more efficient if he isn't ask to be a volume type guy? Can he be a guy who pushes the ball, looks to attack and either get to the rim or pass off and then when we get into the half court the offense becomes Jarron's? If he's taking smart, open 3s can he be a mid 30s 3 point shooter?

This staff liked certain things about him. Houston was in on him late. He has to be more efficient to work on this roster, but I'm not ruling it out.

Brannen understands things like effective FG%. I feel pretty confident that this new addition is going to be instructed to distribute the rock and get to the rim, not launch from deep. We don't need him to do that, especially if Jaevin comes in the fold.

Per 40 minutes McNeal averaged 4.6 assist per 40 minutes at New Mexico (5.6 at WKU), Jenifer averaged 4.4 per 40, so the difference isn't huge. The other scary thing is McNeal averaged 3.1 Turnovers per 40 (Jenifer averaged 1.1). So a small increase in assists, but a big increase in TO's - not a good trade-off.

Still, McNeal sat a year so he is a bit of a mystery. Either he has improved significantly or Brannen is planning to have him backup MAW - or perhaps another PG we haven't signed yet - and help MAW adjust to the game. Being a veteran he could still be nice to have around even if he doesn't start.

I'm not ruling it out either, I'm just using what information we've got to project and I'm hesitant to be too thrilled about this outside of the fact that we got a body who has played D1 basketball in a position of need this late in the cycle. He wasn't a volume guy at either place he played (only attempted 7 shots per game in his career), so I don't know if that has much to do with his shooting numbers. If he becomes a slash and kick guy, I think it could work with his speed, but the numbers he has so far show that it hasn't been what he has been asked to do yet (based on his 2 point attempts and FT rate) added to the fact that we don't really have a lot of floor spacers at the moment, and it's a hard ask to change a kid who has been playing one way for four years in 5 months. I'm in wait and see mode, not Dancing Bearcat mode, for this one.

You are correct on all points but you are comparing Justin's senior 4th year in a system against McNeal's sophomore year and first season in system at New Mexico. Justin his first year here was 2.9 turnovers per 40 minutes. I don't know but I would guess that New Mexico's pace of play probably was faster than ours which would make McNeals assist totals look better and his TO rate look worst. Nobody will come close to the careful way Jenifer handled the ball last year but maybe at times it might be argued he didn't gamble and push things enough.

Indian Hills is a top JC program so his game might have improved there; saw where his coach there complimented the Bearcats today for his commitment.

At Indian Hills - led team to 29-5 record, 13.1 ppg, 83 3’s, 179 assists

He is what he is. A stop-gap guy. Nothing to get excited or down about. Hopefully he can take care of the ball and can learn to be a good distributor in CJB's system. Nobody's gonna be asking this guy to shoot 4.4 threes a game.
