RE: Big 12 deal with ESPN
How is this like the AAC deal for ESPN+, and how is it different.

It's the same because, well, it's ESPN+, putting content behind a paywall.

It's different because, for the AAC, you're talking about the less attractive half of their content. For the Big 12, it's the less attractive 10% or so. The AAC content is moving from CBS-SN and maybe ESPNews to ESPN+, the Big 12 content is moving from ESPN3, Fox Sports Southwest, RSN coverage, "Jayhawk Network." The AAC is looking at their #4 or #5 football game every week on ESPN+, the Big 12 is looking at their FCS games on ESPN+.

It's the same because both the Big 12 and AAC executives hyping it are blowing smoke

It's the same because the posters declaring this to be the end of the world for the Big 12 and/or AAC are panicking over nothing much.

Except that it's no guarantee that the CBSSN stuff will leave for the AAC.... Something that we've said all along, yet some folks refuse to acknowledge that.....

True, which makes the ESPN+ situation even less important for the AAC.

The only things on TV that are not "behind a paywall" are whatever is on over-the-air TV, and that's only if you watch exclusively via antenna.

$100/month to AT&T or Comcrap for "cable" is 20 times as much of a paywall as $5/month for ESPN+.

This is how I read it.

The Big 12 wanted $20M per title game, but Fox said no and withdrew in January. Quite a paycut. I believe Fox paid $25M for the 2017 game.

Meanwhile, Texas makes $15M a year from Tier 3, and the 8 dwarfs share $10M over 6 years for their Tier 3, or a little over $200K per year.

LOL at the 8 dwarfs.

Can you remind us how much UH gets in subsidies to remain relevant? Can you remind us which Chairman of a schools BOR begged/insisted that his school be included among the 8 dwarfs?

Not sure I would call anyone a dwarf that has begged the Big 12 and PAC for membership.

I think where it gets dicey is ESPN starts streaming the XII and finds out the downloads are no higher than the SBC.

To be honest the ratings the P5 get are mostly manufactured by timeslot. AAC hs compared favorably in ratings with comparable timeslots.

This is literally the funniest thing about this whole deal. The complete hypocrisy. If you read the B12 release, every single AD is talking up this deal like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. "Our own network on ESPN+".

What changed in the few weeks since the AAC signed their deal?

Color me shocked that a Big 12/TCU fan who worships college station LingOL at something that didn't happen. This site has no Big 12 fans minus myself, Bullet and a few TCU/Baylor/Kansas fans. Sounds like someone wants to crap all over a conference even though he goes to/graduated from a Big 12 school.

Maybe I missed it but I didn't see 1 single negative comment from a Big 12 fan in this 23 page thread.

What is the Big 12 supposed to say? The deal sucks like the UConn AD did?

The $100/month might get you "everything" but, if you're like me, you'll never watch 99% of it. No matter which cable/satellite/whatever package, there are very few channels I would *ever* watch. For me, cable is $100/month for sports channels plus a very small number of other shows. Just a really expensive paywall to get to the few things I want.

Also, if you're getting buffering with ESPN+ or any other streaming service, the issue is the poor speed and/or reliability of your ISP. I suppose if you have no options other than really crappy internet, then streaming services are not for you.

Actually, it may be on ESPN side. When stream ESPN 3 games I did get buffering but when I streamed a regular channel or Netflix it worked fine.

Exactly. Looking at our 2020 schedule, I would guess the Wyoming game will be on ESPN+ plus some basketball/baseball games.

If they show more Tech baseball games than FSSW, I'll pay the $4.99 a month.

As a TCU fan I got to see nearly all of our football and basketball games with my default TV package that has ESPn/2/U/FS1. The difference with the Big 12 is that with only 10 teams a very small percentage of games are actually tier three. One home football game and a handful of basketball games. I’ll probably sign up for ESPN+ (Probably should because of my fantasy baseball addiction anyway) and maybe enjoy more minor sports content. But unless their is a change in percentage of tier 1/2 content, conference action in football and basketball will not be on ESPN+, with rare exceptions.

Bottom line ESPN is setting it up so that every college football fan is going to have to get ESPN+. Doesn't matter if you are a G5 go or not.

When ESPN+ was launched, they claimed that it would consist of almost entirely *new* content, with very little shifting of content from existing formats that cable TV subscribers already get. Most crucially, ESPN3, which has been a bonanza for college football fans.

I immediately smelled a rat and expressed doubts about that, and my fears are being entirely born out. ESPN3 in particular is being stripped for PLUS.

Heck, even this past season, there was a *noticeable* decline in games on ESPN3 from 2017.

And now with a shifting landscape in TV distribution and consumption ESPN+ is a bonanza for football fans. My cable internet subscription (don't have cable TV) did not provide me with ESPN3. Now I can pay my $60 a year and get all the App State Sports I can manage to watch. ESPN+ has way more content than ESPN3 had for the Sun Belt.

Yeah I would think for a fan of a G5 program, ESPN + is probably a net positive. You get everything and can rewatch too.

It's a net negative, because we used to get all that content with our cable TV and ISP subscriptions.

That's because ESPN+ isn't offering us more football and hoops games than we currently have, it's just cannibalizing ESPN3, shifting games that were on ESPN3 (or in the case of the AAC, ESPN News and U) to PLUS.

ESPN+ means we have to pay $5 more a month to get what we were already getting.

The AAC is G5 because officially, they ARE in the G5, and because unofficially, their money is far, far closer to G5 than P5.

This Big 12 deal changes none of that.

03-lmfao You don't get to decide that... numbers don't like. The AAC (now) lies clearly BETWEEN the P5 and the G4 'clusters'.

I wouldn't be so sure especially when they are moving only a few football games to ESPN+.

P5 built its value through exceptional timeslots.
