It's weird that people seem to think these things are unrelated.

After observing the statements of many on here the past few weeks I almost feel like some would trade consistent regular season success for sneaking into the tournament every few years and a fluke S16 or E8 run.

Well, it shouldn't be an either/or proposition. Yes, Bearcat fans are eager to hang a Sweet Sixteen or Elite Eight banner again (if that's permitted in the new arena).

Our greatest risk today as a program may be apathy. If our ranked team continues to flame out the first weekend of the NCAA--be it against a Nevada or B10 6th place Iowa, fewer fans pound their chests, wear the colors and return the next season begging for more. At some point, the batteries need to be re-charged by a good postseason run.

Certainly hasn't been any correlation between the two for Cincinnati in recent years.

There has, actually. It's pretty unlikely that you're going to make the Elite or Final Four if you aren't a 1, 2, or 3 seed.

Take the last 5 years (I'm guessing the numbers are similar over longer periods of time, but I don't know). 29 of the 40 Elite 8 teams have had a 1, 2, or 3 seed. 15 of the 20 Final 4 teams were those seeds. So nearly half of those seeds made the Elite 8 and a quarter of them made the Final 4.

Be a top 10 team again, get a top 3 seed again, and there's a solid chance that UC will make a tournament run.

I said Mick’s biggest problem is that he won 28 and 29 games and earned a 6 and 7 seed. That is a function of our conference situation, efficiency metrics, scheduling, and overall talent.
