Monmouth, NJ Would Rather Drop To D3 Instead of Paying Athletes
Monmouth. NJ

This is an old news story, but what would the affects of the case that the NCAA lost would do to programs like Monmouth? If the NCAA loses the appeal? Could we see some casualties?

Private schools in New Jersey that aren't named Princeton have no money.

IF the NCAA lost, former players (the plaintiffs in a class action suit) would be paid whatever they were paid out of NCAA revenues (mostly the men's basketball TV contract, which would be a big incentive for the major conferences to bolt the NCAA and leave them holding the bag of liabilities). Future players would be paid by the schools.

Monmouth athletics would continue to be a low-budget enterprise, not making any serious attempt to compete with the Seton Halls and Rutgers and Princetons.

From 2017 when there was some similar responses from even the big guys.

Monmouth would likely do whatever the CAA schools would. That’s what many would do...follow their “peers.”

Monmouth isn't in the CAA. It's in the MAAC and plays football in the Big South. It wants to be in the CAA. If paying players becomes the norm in all sports, I have to think that a lot of mid/lower majors decide to drop down rather than try to keep up.

Many CAA schools are offering the COA, at least for basketball. It's generally one of the better mid major conferences, and most of the teams have a decent amount of money.

Not sure if MAAC schools are offering it or not, and I couldn't find anything on google, but I have a hard time imagining the bottom half of the MAAC even considering it.

They started doing it in football at the CAA schools. They do get decent payouts playing a lot of FBS schools.

Naah, they'll just take their buttwhuppins and keep cashing NCAA tournament checks.

Oh, you mean just like 99% of all D1 schools...

Yup. Nothing specific to Monmouth here.

I'd quibble with 99%--the FBS and major basketball schools spend money to attempt to keep up with the megapowers. But they also cash their checks for bodybag games, and collect their CFP welfare checks, etc.
