Southern. There’s cotton fields and tornadoes. If there’s cactii, it’s southwest. AZ/NM = Southwest

Texas has more species of cactus than any other state:

West Texas has large expanses of desert/mountains, no cotton fields and few tornadoes

San Antonio is more South than West but you Don't have to go too far to hit west.

Merrimack U. is Catholic and they are moving up.

Catholic U. was the most recent D1 school that went D3 which was south.

Long time ago, Saint Leo or Lynn were the most southern Catholic schools in Florida at the high level. Lynn is not associated with the Catholic church anymore. Saint Leo is a school that I think could join A-Sun in the future.

I always felt Dallas has a more Midwestern vibe, Houston is a Southern city and San Antonio more Southwest feel.

I always considered East Texas to be part of the "deep South" and West Texas as "Southwestern" .

As far as Southern States, technically it's any state south of the Mason Dixon line.

When I moved to Austin, a man from Houston told me: east of I-35 is the old South, west of I-35 is the Southwest.
That's about right. East of I-35 in Austin was where the cotton fields were along the coastal plain. West of I-35 the ground turns rocky and vegetation more sparse. Texas is so large it really does have very distinct regions and cultures held together only by the same license plates.

Bellarmine went on the V Show to open up on the motivations and process of going D1.

Listening to coach Scotty Davenport, and how open and enthusiastic he was, makes me think Bellarmine to the A-Sun is virtually a done deal. Will they begin the transition this fall?

I hope it's not a done deal...at least not to the ASun. Coach Davenport was as excited as a little kid at Christmas! I just can't see the HL or even the OVC not making an invite. It would undoubtedly give either League the upper hand over the ASun. Average travel time in the ASun is about 8.5 hours. Bellarmine will have to fly to Florida 3 times and once to NJ. Lipscomb would be they're closest opponent at 2.5 hours. The average travel time in the HL would be 5.5, with Green Bay being the farthest at about 8 hours.

Yeah, both them and Southern Indiana fits Horizon is better. ASun is better to go after schools in Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida.

I see very little boldness in the leadership of the OVC or the Horizon. Also the OVC already has twelve members and doubtful they would go to 13 or 14. The OVC rejected North Alabama. They have been reluctant (at times) to add non-football schools.

RE: Bellarmine U. to Div I?
An aggressive move by the HL would be to add Purdue- Ft.Wayne AND Bellarmine. This would give them twelve members and they could set up more regional games to save travel costs( a flexible or "soft" divisional set-up).

But-- all that aside the rumor is ASUN for Bellarmine.

I spoke to someone connected to Bellarmine that would know for sure. I was told this will be their last season on DII. Transition begins after that. Atlantic Sun is the potential conference and it looks good, but isn't a done deal.

The OVC also rejected Northern Kentucky and said they would no longer accept D2 schools. Same as the SoCon.

Granted, I’m biased as an A-Sun member, but I think the A-Sun meets what Bellarmine is looking for. BU wants to expand it’s brand and influence and be perceived as a national university. It’s current region of influence is the midwest and great lakes region. Being the only Catholic Division 1 school in the south would open up new opportunities. In my opinion, BU is welcoming the exposure throughout the southeast.

The issue for being at the lower levels instead at D1 is that you won't get noticed nationally like the D1 schools. Moving to D1 seems to help enrollment some.
A-SUN should go ahead and merged with Gulf South Conference plus the football affiliates. Then peal off the football schools from non-football to reform Gulf South Conference after 8 years.

The only Gulf South football schools that could do it would be UWG, UWF, and Valdosta State.

Delta St simply cant, and I dont think Mississippi College or Shorter want any part of it.

West Alabama would have to put way more money into facilities they they probably cant afford, but I wish they could.

UAH should move to the ASun, hopefully Tuscaloosa dont stpo them.
