I've heard farmers can't get disaster relief and are in danger of losing their farms. But disaster relief can't get out of Congress.
Apparently the holdup is how much to give Puerto Rico and Democrats efforts to tie in bans on border fencing. You would think they could somehow handle Puerto Rico separately and not hold up the rest of the bill. The unrelated border provisions are inexcusable.
"...Senate GOP leaders have offered $600 million for Puerto Rico for nutrition assistance, a sum that Democrats have said is woefully short of the island’s needs after it was slammed by two deadly hurricanes in 2017.
Democrats are adamant about fully funding Puerto Rico’s food stamp program, which has run out of the $1.27 billion that Congress had temporarily authorized last year.
Senate Republicans have said they support replenishing the food stamps program. But GOP leaders have objected to what they see as unnecessary provisions in the House bill — including language that bans money for constructing or expanding immigration detention facilities or from constructing border fencing.
Amid the stalemate, the situation has become dire in a half-dozen states, from California to Alabama, that have been waiting months for relief...."
