Barnes can retire at UT. As long as the football team isn't terrible, all Barnes has to do is keep the Vols in the top half of the SEC, and beat Kentucky every now and then.
He'd probably last 2 years at UCLA before they ran him off.
Both UCLA and UT will be rebuilds... so it’s just a matter of where he believes he can get it done quicker. UCLA is the best job in the PAC 12 while UT is nowhere near the top job in the SEC. I think a coach with any ambition takes the UCLA job over UT. Barnes might have another 5-7 years in him, so why not spend them at a school with legitimate annual national title resources. LA and So Cal are loaded with high school basketball talent; Knoxville and East Tennessee, not so much.

SEC is damn tough now ... PAC12 is soft. UT in basketball thin Knoxville, UCLA in basketball thick LA. Football school vs basketball school. Fulmer (Fat Phil) better pony up BIG or he's gone !!

RE: Rick Barnes get the **** out of here
I don't see Barnes replicating what he's done over the past two years going forward at UT. He has some decent commitments for 2019 and 2020, but he really struck gold with his 2018 and 2019 teams.
I think I'd almost prefer to have Barnes at Tennessee. Penny's built a nice rivalry with Barnes, and I see Memphis getting the upper-hand in the rivalry over the next few years.

Would anyone really care if Commie-fornia fell off into the Pacific? I’d take the mountains of east TN and the nice friendly people there over anything or anyone California could ever offer.

I’m the exact opposite. I hope he leaves and I hope they return to not caring about basketball and sucking. I don’t want to help them be successful at all. Screw them.

A lot of coaches would be cool with that depending on the pay day. If UCLA pays the money that UT will not then he goes. Or he could be pulling a Cal to get UT to show him the money or even his assistants, because UT has it.

All gr8 points...Ricks stock is sky high rn, So is Pearls fwiw! Rick had UTAY @ number 1 for a good stretch this year and Pearl should be coaching tonite...Seeing the money grab attempt by X is influential as well as intriguing to both... an interesting game of chess being played rn.... I'm curious to see how Pearl gets involved, as he has the value of "the gueen" right now...having gr8 position, let's see if he issues a "mate"

The UT job could be attractive to coaching candidates. They have their fanbase really engaged right now and have some strong commitments in place for 2019 and 2020. The right coach could take that and run with it. I just don't see Barnes maintaining a top-10 program (I could be wrong), and I don't see him winning any recruiting battles against Penny in the state. I'd prefer they throw a bunch of money at Barnes and have him coast into retirement.

That place is losing people right and left. Don't forget about the sky high cost of living, sky high taxes, and the fact you can't move on the I interstate. Whatever increase in pay he gets will be eaten up in taxes and high cost of living. Home of the crips and bloods, Mexican drug traffickers, and homeless crapping in the streets. Did I mention wildfires?
Anyplace in Tennessee is better.
Wow. You’ve never been there have you?
Beat me to the punch Dylan.
The WORST day in Southern California is much better than the BEST day in Knoxville. Period.
I like both. Given the choice I would probably not choose LA though to live. Knoxville is okay except for all the orange and the missing teeth.

If Barnes does go to UCLA and UT hires Forbes, who's Keef gonna root for December 19th?

They just way over-regulate things there. My brother lives in Manhattan Beach. You can only smoke if (a.) you are in a moving car. If the car is not moving you can't smoke (b.) in your residence as long as it isn't a multi-unit one © in designated hotel rooms. Smoking outside is prohibited. I don't smoke but it seems a little extreme to me.

RE: Rick Barnes get the **** out of here
Amazing how after word leaks that UCLA offered Cal 6 years and $48 million, all of the sudden experienced coaches like Barnes are interested in a job that has been open since late December.
UCLA is still a good job. Alford went 31-5 just two seasons ago. Went to three sweet 16s in his 5 full seasons. SoCal loaded with top prospects. Howland went to 3 Final Fours before Alford, to the NCAAs 7 out of 10 years. Steve Lavin 5 sweet 16s in 7 seasons prior to Howland. Before that, Jim Harrick to the NCAAs all 8 of his seasons, won the title in '95. Hard to lose at UCLA.

Lots of local talent, beautful campus that’s 2 miles from the beach, and obviously the history that goes with the program. Anyone can complain about LA all they want but no 18yr freshman would rather be in lexington Kentucky or Lawrence Kansas than LA if given a choice
UCLA should be better than it is. The administration just has no idea how to run a basketball program anymore and the program is fading into irrelevancy especially locally
