FIU at Rice, Game 1
Dunlap homer #10 gives Rice a 2-0 lead in the 1st.

Dunny's en fuego! Two out single by Cruz, followed by Andrew's bomb.

FIU answers with its own 2-out rally, an RBI single and a 3-run homer. 4-2 FIU.

I hate walks by Owl pitchers.

Yup, and both of those one-out walks came on high pitch counts. So far, Matt is unable to put away hitters and get them to swing and miss. I'm not watching, but my guess (based on past history) is that he doesn't yet have the feel for his "plus" curveball, and is having difficulty locating it. It usually takes him a couple innings before he has it working right.

Maybe he was unnerved by Rice's rare showing of run support for him.

After the two run 1st, offense went into hibernation.
End 3
4-2-0
2-2-0

6 up and 6 down for the Owls since the FIU scoring. It’s like they are shell shocked and going down meekly.

Frazier single makes it 4-3. Now in the 5th. FIU's starter is their ace too so it's not like we're going up against a midweek retread.

FIU up 5-3 now in the bottom of the 7th. Canterino gets out of a jam in the 7th but I can't imagine he has many pitches left in him tonight. FIU to the pen finally.

3 straight hits off the FIU pen makes it 5-4. Two on and no out still in the 7th. I'm kind of surprised FIU hasn't gone to either of their top two relievers yet (they have one reliever with 2 saves and a 0.00 ERA).

Owls tie it up on a GIDP. 5-5 in the 8th now. Canterino still in there and gets them 1-2-3 in the 8th (he's now at about 100 pitches).

3 errors by FIU in the 8th would qualify as pretty lucky. Rice takes the lead after some little league defense.

And we're getting it. A leadoff walk to Edwards, followed by an error on Cox's bunt attempt put two runners on with no outs. The a double error on a pickoff attempt at 2B, scores one run, with Cox moving to 3B. Frazier then walks. 6-5 Rice, runners at the corners, no outs. Need this insurance run.

And the insurance run scores on a Comeaux ground out. 7-5 Rice. And Gneitting gets our first hit of the inning, scoring Frazier. 8-5 Rice.

He and Dunny have been carrying the team.
