RE: 2019 NFL Draft (April 25-27)
We don’t have to look too far to find a guy with very similar traits as Sutton, and that was Pat Schiller.
Schiller - 6’2”, 235. 4.68 40, 6.96 3 cone, 4.20 shuttle
SSmith - 6’1”, 237. 4.69 40, 6.75 3 cone, 4.32 shuttle.

Schiller went undrafted and had a nice career. Still see him around town in Geneva. Didn’t have nearly the success at NIU as Sutton did. But can Sutton have the success in the NFL that Schiller enjoyed?

Nice career? Success? Pat Schiller never played in an NFL regular season game.

For some reason I thought he played some special teams but you’re right, he didn’t see the field. But he did sign a futures contract with Atlanta and a contract with the rams for maybe 800k total. Then got in injury settlement from the rams for his neck. So he probably made over a million in 3 years. Does Sutton spend more or less than 3 years on a NFL team in any way?

RE: 2019 NFL Draft (April 25-27)
2019 NFL Draft Player Profiles: NIU EDGE Sutton Smith

Quote:His role in the NFL likely boils down to two positions. The first being a backup pass rusher where a coach can try to find a way to help Smith overcome his size with his speed and dip move. The second being an off-ball linebacker where his hustle and tackling consistency can make him a great depth piece. Whether as an off-ball linebacker or backup pass rusher, Smith has the makings of also being a special teams ace.

Projection: Late Day Three

Agree with the Day 3 projection and Special Teams Ace comment.

A late round (6-7) flyer pick on Sutton is easily justified with the (almost) universal projection as an immediate, and impact, Special Teams contributor. This is why I believe he will not go undrafted.

Sutton's biggest potential upside still belongs to a team running a 3-4 Defense, so as stated earlier, that's where I see him ending up.

If I had to narrow down the larger list above, I would say the Steelers, Colts, Chiefs, Falcons, Ravens, and Patriots are among the most likely teams to take a chance on him.

Anyone else care to make a projection?

2019 NFL Draft starts tonight.

I expect Max to be selected tomorrow (Friday) but you never know what surprises tonight may have in store.

The first OL is off the board. The Bengals select 'Bama's Jonah Williams (announced as an OT) with the 11th overall pick.

And now the second. The Falcons take BC's Chris Lindstrom with the 14th pick.

Third OL (Center) off the board at pick 18 by the Vikes.

OT Andre Dillard goes to the Eagles at pick 22.

Maybe a bit of a run coming, back-to-back OT picks with the Texans taking Tytus Howard at 23.

Sixth OL, and 4th OT, goes to the Falcons at pick 31.

Day 1 Tally: Six OLineman taken in Round 1, including four OT's.

Day 2:

The Colts have three 2nd Round picks (34, 46, 59), I believe that Max has a good chance to go at one of these spots.

If the Colts pass on Max with the 59th pick, the Chargers sitting there with pick 60 could be possible.

With Daniel Jones’ surprise selection at 6 it got me thinking about the QBs NIU has faced in their terrible bowl run since 2012. While the Huskies did look ill prepared often, they drew some tough qb match ups:

12 - EJ Manuel - 1st round pick. 6 yrs and going in NFL
13 - Darrel Garretson - scrub. But D only gave up 21 points.
14 - Rakeem Cato - NCAA 10th all time pass yards
15 - Brett Rypien - NCAA 13th all time pass yards
17 - Daniel Jones - 1st round. #6 player chosen.

In 4 of the last 5 bowls NIU faced two first round NFL draft picks and 2 top 15 ncaa all-time passing leaders.

No question being overmatched in our bowl games has been a significant factor in the bowl game losing streak.

RE: 2019 NFL Draft (April 25-27)
OT Jawaan Taylor to Jacksonville with pick No. 35.

OT Greg Little to Carolina with pick No. 37.

So far both teams selecting OTs have traded up to get them.

Make that three teams. Buffalo moves up from 40 to 38 to select OT Cody Ford. That tells me they were worried that another team was exploring moving up ahead of them at 40 for an OT. We're in the middle of that OT run (at the beginning of the 2nd Round as I projected rather than late 1st).

Picks No. 44 - 46 even more interesting now.

The run continues. Broncos select OT out of K-State with pick No. 41.

Packers take an OL (Guard) with the 44th pick.

Rams trade down from 45 to 56 (& 101).

Now Browns & Colts swap picks 49 and 46.

Saints trade up to take an OL (Center) with the 48th pick. Colts on the clock.

Damn. Colts take LB out of TCU (not JJ) with pick No. 49.
