Saw a mock draft that had Mac going mid 2nd round. Surprised to hear that high, heard others state that he may be moved inside.

Max helped himself with his Senior Bowl and NFL Combine performances.

He had a 4th Round grade prior to those two events and he basically solidified that being his floor. Mid 2nd Round - 3rd Round is probably more likely now.

Some scouts project him to the inside but enough have him as a viable OT in the NFL that I'd be surprised if Max is available after four rounds. I expect to hear his name called on Day 2.

Chargers Scouting Report: NIU OT Max Scharping
ChargersWire Wrote:Chargers Fit
For some, Scharping needs a year under his belt to fight for a starting job, but I believe he can try to earn it during Year 1 as a pro. Given the huge need at the right tackle position, Scharping has the ability to compete with Sam Tevi and beat him out for the starting role.

I don't think the article mentions in what Round it's projecting Max to go to the Chargers, but this tweet states Round 3.

https://twitter.com/TheChargersWire/stat...6883954688

Max may be off the board by the time the Chargers pick at the end of the 3rd Round (91st overall). Mel Kiper has Cincinnati selecting Max in the 3rd Round with the 72nd overall pick in his latest mock draft.

Also, the Packers, who own the 75th overall pick in Round 3, are looking for an OLineman and have interviewed Max. The Colts have also interviewed Max, they hold the 59th overall pick (Round 2).

Reading where Max'sstyle is geared toward a zone scheme and him inside. Hope he lands with the Colts, home of former NIU great Siper Bowl winning Ryan Diem.

Nice. This is better than my Mid-2nd to 3rd Round projecton. And this is coming (indirectly) from NFL Scouts.

I never ruled out late-first round for Max but that may depend on the timing of an OT run, which often does happen in the late 1st Round, and whether or not Max is part of that first run of OTs.

Smith will get drafted. Being in the combine, and an All a star game almost guarantees that. I think he’ll go in the 4th or 5th at the latest.

Someone needed to let the NFL know that when it came to Jordan Lynch. I think Smith goes 6th round. His projections have nose dived since the combine. Really didn’t help listing him at Edge because his measurable just make him a huge risk there.

While it's in the realm of possibility that Sutton goes undrafted, I don't think he will. I agree that his stock has dropped since the combine, where his size measurables just didn't help when stacked next to physical monsters in the Edge position, but his productivity and athletic measurements are enough for a team to take a chance on him.

Initially I had Sutton as a 6-7 Round selection (leaning towards 7th), with the 5th Round being a possibility. But I've revised my opinion to think he'll be selected in the top half of Round 6 (around pick #180, but looking at where teams are picking #175 to the Steelers looks promising) with his range in the 5-7 Rounds.

My comp for Sutton, which I haven't seen anywhere else, is Danny Trevathan of the Bears.

I see Sutton excelling in the NFL as a "Buck" or 3-4 inside LB. More specifically, a "Jack" or pass-rushing specialist Buck.

Regarding the Trevathan comp (taken from a message I wrote a buddy of mine):
NorthCoast Wrote:NFL Combine profile:
http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/dann...id=2532961

Draft Scout profile:
http://www.draftscout.com/ratings/dsprof...tyear=2012

Trevathan weighed in at 237 lbs at the Combine, which is what Sutton was listed at NIU. Although, Sutton weighed in a few pounds lighter at the Senior Bowl and Combine.

Trevathan measured in at 6' 0 2/8" at the Combine, 1/8" shorter than Sutton.

Trevathan 32 1/2" arms and 9 1/2" hands vs 30 3/4" arms and 9" hands for Sutton.

Trevathan only put up 18 reps vs Sutton's 25. Danny ran a 4.84 vs 4.69 for Sutton.

Trevathan scored 9'-3" on the Broad Jump vs 9'-10" for Sutton.

ADDED: Both scored an identical 31.5" vertical jump.

Very similar with Sutton actually showing more athleticism, speed, and strength than Trevathan and also a bit taller and only 4lbs lighter.

Trevathan can beast some plays running guys down, Sutton in that role with less cover responsibilities and more blitzing duties would be the ideal scheme for him, in my opinion.

Any reservations about Sutton being able to play ILB in a 3-4 scheme should be tempered by looking at a Trevathan comp.

It's my opinion that Sutton will be drafted by a team running a 3-4 Defense and that he'll play on the inside behind the line of scrimmage. That's my hope, anyway. I think this is what's best for him.

I'm trying to lockdown a list of all current teams running a 3-4 Defense but haven't been able to. If anyone here can help with that, I would be very grateful.

GO HUSKIES!

Totally agree smith could excel as an ILB in 3-4 running sideline to sideline. Another good physical comp for smith is Darius Leonard. He had a great rookie year with the Colts and came out of FCS SC state. Playing LB at about 220.

Sweet. Thanks for this. Is this current (it lists the San Diego Chargers)?

I've found a few lists but they're all like 7-8 years outdated.

Given this new info, these are the teams that I believe are more likely to draft Sutton:

3-4 Defenses
• Chicago Bears
• Green Bay Packers
• Washington Redskins
• Atlanta Falcons
• New Orleans Saints
• Arizona Cardinals
• Pittsburgh Steelers
• Indianapolis Colts
• Houston Texans
• Tennessee Titans
• J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets
• Denver Broncos
• Kansas City Chiefs
• Los Angeles Chargers

Multiple Fronts
• Baltimore Ravens
• Cleveland Browns
• Buffalo Bills
• New England Patriots

I would love to hear why you believe that...... Every team in the NFL is looking for a high motor/high character player like Smith. His upside is too good not to draft. He’s played D- End for only 2 seasons and dominated all of his competition. The tape don’t lie.

He’s a special teamer for a year or maybe two while teams try to figure out what to do with him. That almost drops him down to a 5th rounder alone. Now you add no LB experience, the position his measurable suggest he should play, and that’s a gamble. At the all star game he got pancaked by big left tackles playing the edge. That was the knock on him coming in and it was highlighted in practice. That may have turned off the teams who considered taking him at edge.

He’s in a tough spot. A tweener from a small school. It’s really like Lynch. Although Jordan put up historical numbers, like smith, it didn’t translate to how pros evaluate where they fit at the next level.

Still, it only takes one team to see his potential. So let’s hope there’s a team out there who has a LB coach who thinks he can turn him into a stud.

It could also come down to simple math. There are approximately 3,500 players eligible to be drafted each year and 256 of them are drafted.

ESPN listed 10 sleepers who they love the most. One of them is Max:

Max Scharping, OT, Northern Illinois
Position ranking: No. 7
Overall ranking: No. 50

It might not have looked the prettiest, but all Scharping did for four seasons at NIU was get the job done. His lowest single-season pass-blocking grade in that span was an 87.2 that came in 2016. He allowed all of 33 pressures on 1,894 pass-blocking snaps in his college career. At a hulking 6-foot-6, 327 pounds, he can be a starting tackle in the NFL sooner rather than later.

No position guy with no off the chart physical numbers. IMO, he is not physically strong enough. If he becomes engaged he gets pinned. But thats my opinion we will find out next Saturday.
