I could see several Mid Major programs still wanting him, UCLA was going hard after Barnes and he is about to turn 65 and was 60 when he Tennessee hired after he had been fired at Texas.
Don't see age being a big deal. The bigger question is with that much money in the bank would he still have the drive to keep coaching.

RE: Virginia Tech job
I was just loitering on the Wofford message board. Most contributors seem to prefer that McAuley be promoted to head coach. A couple of posters, oddly enough, were suggesting John Shulman get the job (even though they admitted that they didn't think he was even coaching now) based on his being an assistant at Wofford some time in the past and his fluctuating record at UTC. A number of the Woffordites (Woffordozians?) were concerned Ervin from Gate City might follow Young to VT, especially considering that his father went to VT. I don't really know that much about Ervin, but if any ACC schools had shown any interest in him, I doubt that he would have committed to Wofford.

RE: Virginia Tech job
According to Verbal Commits, Ervin picked up 17 offers from solid midmajor programs. But no power conference offers. http://www.verbalcommits.com/players/zac-ervin
Using a scholarship on a player like Ervin would probably rile the fan base who would take it as a sign that Young didn't understand the type of player that was required to be competitive in the ACC. Not that Young is likely to care much about fan evaluation of players.

If anybody has a skill set that might be useful to Tech, it could be rising senior 6-4 Nathan Hoover as a 3 point specialist shooting .469 with 2.6 makes beyond the arc, or 6-9 225 Keve Aluma (6.8 rebounds, 6.9 ppg on .667 shooting with no three's), a rising Junior who improved over his freshman year. But I don't think that any of them will draw power conference interest.

Young once made a crack about building a program 'the right way', instead of going for transfers or JUCO's. That didn't stop him from bringing on Charleston transfer Chevez Goodwin at Wofford. We'll see how much of that conviction transfers with Young to Tech.

RE: Virginia Tech job
I doubt there would be much complaining from Virginia Tech fans if Ervin switched to the Hokies. Three of their players have announced transfers. Another one is exploring his NBA chances. Their top recruit has backed off his commitment. Another well regarded recruit is supposedly following Williams to Texas A&M. Their other two recruits are still committed but reconsidering their status.

They need to fill their roster, and an in-state guy with Virginia Tech roots and some local fame should be fine.

The last time I looked at their forum (and it has been a few days) they were screaming about Young's hire. Ervin, with no major offers would send them over the edge!

From a Virginia Cavs fan, I love it!!!

Ervin may be damaged goods. His high school coach said recently Ervin’s main issue was with his OTHER knee (not one he had surgery on). He hurt his surgical knee because of tendonitis/inflammation/swelling of other knee.

No claim to Virginia Tech expertise on my part, but Verbals Commits shows some players that Buzz signed who weren't highly recruited. Sophomore P.J. Horne had two other offers listed on his recruiting sheet - Murray State and Alcorn State. Freshman Isaiah Wilkins had four other offers listed - Hampton, High Point, Presbyterian, and VCU. Incoming freshman Andre Gordon has a handful of mostly mid-major offers (did have ones from Boston College and Xavier too.)

Did their fans complain about signing those guys? With all the players it appears they are losing I don't think signing Ervin would be at the top of their list of complaints.

I feel like if Mac McClung was a recruit this or the upcoming year. He would be heading to Virginia Tech.

Ummmm..........not that likely, as Va. Tech has no law school. Not that it *had* to have one, but I'm pretty certain that was very high on his evaluation list.

RE: Virginia Tech job
Buried in a Times News article about baseball is information that Ervin is undecided about attending Wofford. "I'm just going to take a little time to think about it." He had a conversation with Mike Young since Young was announced as the VT coach and that conversation did not include Ervin becoming a Hokie. The direct quote was "He's still getting settled in and we really didn't talk about that."

The article's author (not quoting Ervin) stated that Ervin was recruited heavily by ETSU, Samford, Mercer, Liberty, and Florida Gulf Coast.

Given his age and Wofford salary, even if he bombs at Va Tech, he’ll come out way ahead financially as he moves rapidly towards retirement.
