This 1st year Yale Law Student says Cruz got it all wrong.
"First, what is Yale Law’s policy? Every year, the school funds a variety of programs that help students who want to go into public interest law. These initiatives include summer stipends, post-graduate fellowships and loan forgiveness for students working for non-profit, government and charitable organizations. Students use these grants to work at a diverse set of organizations, from the ACLU to the Institute for Justice, a libertarian non-profit law firm.
On March 25, a unanimous Yale committee reaffirmed that the school should not fund organizations that discriminate against students, including LGBT students. Under the policy, students can still opt to work for organizations that deny equal employment opportunities to their classmates, but Yale will not fund it. The motivation of the policy is simple: Yale Law does not want to subsidize employment discrimination against its students.
Enter Cruz. The senator distorted this straightforward nondiscrimination policy, contending it “arose from unconstitutional animus and a specific discriminatory intent both to blacklist Christian organizations like Alliance Defending Freedom” and “punish Yale students whose values or religious faith lead them to work there.”
It does nothing of the sort. The policy does not punish conservative organizations for their views. Students can still work for organizations that advance anti-LGBT policies — and receive funding from Yale to do it. Instead, it establishes that Yale will not use its limited resources to fund organizations that discriminate against minorities, including sexual minorities, in making employment decisions.
