I’m not saying they are but I’m sure scouts will once again tell him to go make NIU a winner and get stronger.

Even if he comes back our basketball team is not poised for a March madness run.
There is probably truth in that but at same time the landscape of the MAC is significantly different next year. NIUs odds of winning the MAC next year are probably higher than this past year, although still very low. With losses of Bradley and Thorpe, I think NIU is not as much of a slave to German's decision this time around. I would almost be fine with it either way. If he returns great, might have a shot to make a run at first round bye, if he does not return it's a great time to rebuild and see new leadership develop, which is desperately needed. If German returns, Monty coaching makes more sense to me. If German leaves, I sure wish it would have been under a new coach with a fresh start and clean slate to rebuild the culture

People forget that we played Michigan State this season and Eugene German showed up and played well against Cassius Winston.

RE: German declares
What could me make in the G League? I haven't kept up with their salaries.
A little O/T but I'd like to have the NBA and NCAA agree on a 0 or 2 option for high school seniors:
Option 1:
Sign with a school and not be NBA draft eligible for TWO years.
Option 2:
Sign professionally with the NBA, G-League, overseas pro ball and then be eligible for the draft in TWO years (if not drafted out of h.s.).
Too often fans watch the frosh in the NCAA tourney and then they are off to the NBA... It hurts D-I hoops.
We'd like to see Williamson, Barrett, Reddish, Jones, etc. back for a 2nd year.
Option #2 above would treat G League, overseas, etc. much like part of a farm system.

This is somewhat similar to the way its done in baseball. Of course, in baseball, players don't declare for the draft, they just get drafted. So, in this case, the player drafted does not lose eligibility. If a player signs with a pro team as a high school senior, they obviously forfeit their eligibity. However, any player who chooses to go to a 4 year university, it required to stay 3 years. They can choose to sign with a JUCO and be eligible after just one year to be drafted again.
Now, there is a big difference here where there are about 50 rounds in the baseball draft and only 2 in basketball. Players often are drafted out of high school and then choose to go to JUCO and dramatically increase their draft position after one year.
I don't see this happening in the basketball draft, though, so it may not work as well.

NIU's Eugene German won't take 'no' for an answer in quest to play in the NBA
Quote:“Honestly, man, if I’m going to get picked up, if a team is going to offer me a contract, I’m going,” he said.
Quote:“I’m really not a set-play person,” he said. “There is a lot more pick and roll in the NBA and open-court movement. There is more isolation. That’s where I could go to work.”
Quote:Eugenia said plenty of people have told Eugene to go play in Europe, where he would easily excel.
But Eugenia said Eugene is set on the NBA.
Is it NBA or bust?
Will he forego Europe (if the NBA isn't an option) and go back for his final year at NIU?
If the NBA is the goal, that would make sense. If the NBA still isn't an option after his Senior year at NIU, he can always go to a European League (Liga ACB, Go Barça!) then.

I, like the rest of us on this board, hope that Eugene realizes his dream and makes it to the NBA. The reality is that in a 2 round draft, he will not get drafted and he will have to go another route to show that he can play at an NBA level.

I don't buy it. If you are good enough, you will play in the NBA, sounds like scapegoating again much like MM. If only NIU didnt suck, Monty would be a great coach and German would be in the NBA, blah blah blah

That is true, but unfortunately this is the culture of our basketball program. Probably the main reason we continue to lose players. Guys don’t believe they will get noticed here even though it’s BS. Clearly not the case though because German has been noticed.

Considering he didn't make either the NBA or G-League combine lists, hopefully he sees the writing on the wall, has gotten more feedback on developing his game and will be back

A random role player at UIC bailed last year to go pro overseas, I'm sure he could, but if his goal is the NBA, I'd think staying in the US as long as he can would be the best move.

Get your degree first then if you have eligibility left, jump ship and go for it.

If one was developing an outlook for 2019-20 NIU bball, would your outlook include or exclude German. Is it less than or greater than 50 percent he stays ?

At this point, my outlook has excluded German, however that was before I found out he had not been included in the NBA or G-League combine lists...now I don't know what to think.
Ultimately, I won't count him in until he officially is back in. For him, its got to depend on what his goal is. If it's the NBA, staying at NIU is probably the best idea (if he can't get in to the G-League). However, if its to simply make money playing basketball, then go to Europe and have a career. But, I have no idea what his ultimate goal is.

If no other student is held to this standard then why should a basketball player?
