Important win to keep the momentum going and the confidence up. Super relief effort by Tyner, Lewis and Gayle. Well done. Now, let keep it going against a suddenly struggling FIU club.

We didn't make too many mistakes. We hit the ball when we needed to. Our pitching was solid.
Against a good opponent.

RE: Rice Baseball @San Houston State
After 31 games, we’re 13-18 with a RPI of 98...
C-USA is weak this year, so we’ll have a chance to rack up some wins, especially the next few weeks.
Over the next three series (FIU, @Charlotte, MT), none have a winning record and 2/3 are at home.
We also get LA Tech and USM at home this year which helps.
15-10 (which seems doable if we continue playing well) would put us at .500 entering the conference tourney.
IMO, it’s not a stretch to think we could go closer to 17-8 which would put us at 30-26 entering the tournament...
To get 17 wins though, I’d say we need to go 8-1 (7-2 at worst) or so in these next three conference series.

UPDATED - Gayle's numbers since the world learned of his flat fastball...
8 IP, 11 K's, 3 hits, 1 BB, 2 HBP, 1 WP
If his fastball is flat then so is the world.

Just win.

As a spectator, it’s fun to look at big picture.

I wonder how our record would differ if we were still under Graham this season.

I think probably not a lot.
The problem is talent, not coaching. The players we have are not bad players, and certainly not bad people. They just don't have the baseball talent that we got used to with Anderson, Berkman, Neiman, Humber, Townsend, Aardsma, Janish, Savery, and Rendon. The solution is recruiting, not coaching. And with the Rice Investment potentially removing one recruiting hurdle, and with no more negative recruiting based on Wayne's age and uncertainty, we should be able to get back there in a few years. But this is not a quick fix.

FWIW we have a better record this year through the same number of games than we did last year with an equal schedule (this year maybe even tougher)...
and that’s without Ford Proctor, Ryan Chandler, etc (we haven’t really had any impactful additions this year soooo).

I agree with probably not a lot. But some coaches do get more out of their players than others. Optimistic me says that Bragga's approach is more positive and could keep players from giving up on the season.

Cade Edwards is not an impactful addition? Also, Bradley Gneitting is having a terrific year vs. big time stuggling last year.

Well put it this way:
We lost more than we gained.
And exactly with Gneiting... Wouldn’t that suggest that this year’s staff is doing a better job?

Our offence is much better this year. No question. Cade Edwards is definitely having an impact year and his defense is stellar. Gneitting is having a great year. Cruz , Collins, Cox have much better stats and of course Dunlap is having a great year. Cruz is not proctor defensively at SS though.
We have 2 starting pitchers right now and 1 1/2 pitchers in the bullpen!!!!. Jefferies is solid and Gayle has been 50/50 but improving.
The rest of the bullpen is not good at all.

There is plenty of talent on this team to get to .500 if we play sound and smart baseball.

Weather doesn't look promising for this weekend, although it's still a fluid forecast. For awhile, they were saying Saturday was looking pretty wet but now it's looking like Sunday might be a washout. FIU is already in town (they lost to UH last night on a walk-off single by the Coogs in the 9th inning). I really think we might be looking at either a Friday or Saturday DH, and no game on Sunday??

A Saturday doubleheader would make sense.

We're now playing a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2 pm. No game Sunday.

heh.... an 80% chance of rain is definitely 'fluid' in many different respects.
